Tigers Lose Close Game to Louisville 94-92
In
what started out as a David and Goliath matchup with Big East
powerhouse Louisville hosting NAIA Georgetown College, the
Tigers proved that they, too, are a team to be respected. In
front of 17, 146 the Tigers lost 94-92 to a young Louisville
lineup.
The Cardinals led by as many as 15 in the first half, with both teams shooting at or above 50% from the field, and took a 50-46 lead into the locker room at half. After the break, the Tigers came out and scored early to cut the lead to two before Louisville called a full timeout to reorganize.
But Georgetown kept knocking on the door.
Jason Petrimoulx, who finished with 18 points on the night, hit a three at 18:27 to make it 52-51. Justin Taylor followed with another to make cut the lead to one, again, 55-54 and Donnovan Brown scored in the paint to again get the Tigers within one at 57-56.
At 12:15 to go the game was tied for the first and only time at 64 when Petrimoulx hit another of his four three-pointers. The Cardinals responded with six unanswered points, including a three-pointer by Edgar Sosa to bring the Louisville faithful took to their feet and the Georgetown coaching staff to call a timeout.
David
was quickly running out of stones to throw when Georgetown’s
Kevin Reinhardt fouled out with 10:22 to go, followed by Justin
Taylor getting his fifth at 4:35 and Chris Lee joining them on
the bench at the 2:50 mark. The finale of fouls was a
questionable fifth foul on Eric Fields with 2:23 to go that took
him out of the game and Osborne declared that he was “out of
posts”
Jason Petrimoulx hit a three to put the Tigers in the lead for the only time at 82-81 with 5:27 left to play, but Louisville answered with a Terrance Williams dunk followed by a Juan Palacios layup. Georgetown’s Craig Schoen stole the ball from Sosa and laid it in to once again bring the Tigers within one, 86-85, but Louisville pushed the lead back out with some free throws at the end 94-89 before Schoen hit a last second three pointer to make the final score 94-92.
It was a ballgame that the Tigers will remember – they just ran out of stones.
