Georgetown Takes Top Spot in NAIA Coaches' Poll (2-20-08)
The latest version of the NAIA Coaches’ Poll is official and, after spending seven weeks at #2, the Georgetown College Tigers are now listed at the top.
“Right now it is a nice honor but I don’t think it really matters,” said Head Coach Happy Osborne. “To me it’s like leading after two rounds of the Masters or halfway through the Derby - there is a lot of work left to do.”
This is the first time the Tigers have held the coveted spot since the 2002-03 season, when they found themselves #1 in January and ended the season with a trip to the Final Four.
After previous #1 Mountain State lost to Lindsey Wilson on February 12th, a team Georgetown beat 95-48 on February 9th, it has been expected that the Tigers would make the jump from #2 to #1.
This year’s team is 26-0 on the year and the only undefeated team in the NAIA. They expect to be tested on the road Thursday at Pikeville College after it took overtime to beat the Bears 87-79 on January 31st.
The Tigers have not lost a regular season game since Huntington University beat them at home on December 7, 2006, a streak of 44 games in a row. The 1993-94 team holds the longest undefeated record of 31-0 in school history.
Women’s Team Remains at No. 28
Despite being tied for first place in Mid-South Conference standings, the Georgetown College Women’s Basketball team remains at #28 in the latest NAIA Coaches’ Poll. The Tigers are18-7 and 5-1 in MSC play and have stayed in the same spot for the fourth time. Next up is a road trip to Pikeville on Thursday before a conference showdown at home on Saturday with Cumberlands.
