Georgetown's Perfect Season Intact (2-9-08)
The Georgetown College Tigers continue to roll through the season with a
95-48 win over visiting Lindsey Wilson College on Saturday. The Tigers were
led by Demetrius Guions with 22 points and had four players in double
figures. Georgetown took over at 15 minutes to go in the first half with the
score tied at nine. They went on a 20-0 run and ended the half up 36 points,
56-20.
Georgetown has high hopes of marching into the NAIA National Tournament for
a record 17th time in a row, and perhaps making school history
along the way. The Tigers have not lost a regular season game in 43 games,
with the last loss coming on December 7, 2006 to Huntington University.
The only Georgetown team to have an undefeated regular season was the 1991-92 Tigers. The team breezed through the regular season with a 31-0 record before losing in the conference finals to Cumberlands and making it to the elite eight of the national tournament. The team, led by the late Coach Jim Reid, ended the year with an overall record of 34-2.
This season’s second-ranked Tigers are currently 25-0 and 5-0 in the
always difficult Mid-South Conference. Three conference schools are top-20
teams, with two others receiving votes in the weekly NAIA Coaches’ Poll.
Along the perfect record path Georgetown has faced ranked (at the time)
teams in #4 Faulkner, #9 Campbellsville, #10 Pikeville, #12 Lambuth and #25
Huntington (Division II). Last week featured an 87-79 overtime test from
Pikeville.
So how much pressure comes with a perfect season still intact at this point
of the year? “To be honest with you, we aren’t even thinking about it,” said
Head Coach Happy Osborne. “We aren’t guaranteed a trip to the national
tournament yet and that has to be the focus. Everyday you have to get better
and just take things one practice at a time.”
The Tigers are now off for a week and will next see action on February 16th at Campbellsville.
