Georgetown wins second straight tourney title, 73-59

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The Georgetown Tigers will carry their undefeated season into the national tournament after winning the championship game of the 2008 Community Trust Bank Mid-South Conference tournament 73-59 over the University of the Cumberlands Monday afternoon in the East Kentucky Expo Center.

If the Tigers lose this season it will happen in historic Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, the site of the 2008 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship tournament, beginning March 19.

Leading 35-31 at the half, Georgetown scored eight of the first 10 second-half points to push its lead to double figures for the first time in the game. Senior Justin Taylor had six of the eight points and finished the game with 13 points.

Georgetown (32-0) led by 13 points twice in the middle of the second half. Cumberlands got it as close as seven on two occasions, including on a basket by junior Josh Phillips with 5:19 left to cut it to 64-57. Phillips led Cumberlands with 15 points and nine rebounds.

But from there it was all Tigers, scoring nine of the final 11 points to put the finishing touches on the tournament title.

MSC Player of the Year Gus Chase led all scorers with 20 points in the win. Junior David Graham followed with 17. Junior Demetrious Guions, who had four points, led the Tigers with nine rebounds and added three assists, three steals and two blocks.

Phillips was joined in double figures by junior Luke Fitzgerald’s 12 points and eight rebounds for the Patriots. Sophomore Chad Byron had eight points and six assists for Cumberlands, who will head to the national tournament with a record of 19-13.
