Georgetown Advances to Second Round with 83-59 Win (3-19-08)
Kansas
City, Mo. - Georgetown College held on to a perfect 33-0 record and moved on
to the second round of the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men's Basketball
National Championship with a 83-59 win over Emmanuel College on Wednesday.
But while Head Coach Happy Osborne is pleased to have a second date in Kansas City, he says he is disappointed with his team's performance.
Georgetown's Bret Saxton is fouled by Emmanuel's Chase
Procuro late in the second half.
"I'm not going to sugar-coat it," said Osborne. "We didn't play well tonight
and I think it is only fair to be honest with our team so we can learn from
it."
The Tigers struggled in the first half, shooting only 38 percent and
turning the ball over ten times before improving to 53 percent (17 of 32) in
the second half after a halftime talk from Osborne. "I told them we
have to play through it and we came out in the beginning of the second half
and made improvements but there are still more to make."
It was Emmanuel's first trip to the national tournament and Head Coach TJ
Rosene hopes his young team can build on it. "I hope that we got a
taste of it and it makes us hungry to get back. We had four freshmen
on the court for most of the second half and those kids just have to mature
and know what it takes."
One of those freshmen, Tedrick Hudson, had a significant coming out party,
scoring 28 points and adding 13 points for the only double-double of the
game.
Georgetown was led by senior Gus Chase who finished with 19 points, 11 in
the second half. Marlon Mahorn added 18, including a lob-turned-bankshot
for three points midway through the second half.
The Tigers will face Trevecca Nazarene University on Friday. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. EST and will be broadcast live on 101.5 FM and www.georgetowncollegeathletics.com
