Laski & McDaniel Named Cross Country Head Coaches (12-15-09)
After a combined 20 years with the Georgetown
College Cross Country teams, former Tigers Betsy Evans Laski and
Todd McDaniel have been named the head coaches effective
immediately.
The duo, who will also guide the men's and women's track and field teams, take over for Kevin Calhoun, who has been reassigned as the business manager for the Tiger Athletics department. In addition, Calhoun will continue as head coach of the men's and women's tennis teams.
Betsy Evans Laski begins her first year as head coach after serving as assistant coach for the past four seasons.
The Lexington native graduated from Georgetown in 2005 with a degree in political science and economics. Laski also holds a master's degree in public policy from the University of Kentucky.
As a Tiger herself, she qualified as an individual for the NAIA National meet as a freshman, the first runner do qualify since 1995. She went on to be named the Mid-South Conference Runner of the Year and the NAIA Region XI Champion during her senior year. In addition, she was honored as a NAIA Scholar Athlete and the A.O. Duer Award for her accomplishments in the classroom.
She continues to run competitively, running in the 2006 San Diego Marathon, 2007 Boston Marathon and the Chicago Marathon last October.
Laski is excited to begin her career as a head coach at her alma mater. "Georgetown is special to me. It's kind of where I 'grew up' and became a more confident, capable individual."
Laski works full-time as a community development specialist in the Department for Community & Economic Development at the Bluegrass Area Development District in Lexington. She and her husband Ryan were married in 2007.
McDaniel graduated from Georgetown in 2002 after running in the Tigers' top two spots throughout his career. He served as a team captain during his junior and senior years and was named the most valuable runner. He immediately began serving as an assistant upon graduation.
He and Laski, plan to work together to build on the recent success
of individual runners who have qualified for the NAIA National
Championships.
"Right now Betsy and I are going to work together to build the program," said the Frankfort native. "We will focus on the women's team because we will just have three returners next season. Our goal is to have no less than 15 runners on both the men's and women's teams each year."
McDaniel hopes to fill a team of evenly talented runners who haven't reached their peak because he feels he can make them hungry by not knowing where they fall within their team. "There were many times this season where we didn't know what order our runners would finish and there isn't a big gap between our top and bottom. Getting athletes that know they can be better will make them better on race day."
With the addition of top programs Rio Grande and soon-to-be Shawnee State to the Mid-South Conference, McDaniel knows he has his work cut out. "We have to want to get better and not be comfortable where we are."

Chesser Wins MSC Championship (11-7-2009)
Louisville,
Ky. -- Georgetown College's Britney Chesser won the
Mid-South Conference Championship and was
named the MSC Female Runner of the Year at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park on
Saturday.
Chesser, a five-time MSC Runner of the Week this season, captured the individual championship running the 5,000 meter course in 18 minutes and 58 seconds and qualified herself for the NAIA National Meet. The Louisville native also earned MSC All-Conference honors reserved for the top-10 finishers at the MSC Championships. On the men's side, Grant Curran and Lucas Garnett were also selected for All-Conference honors and will move on to the national meet as individuals.
Following the race at the annual cross country banquet, five Tigers were recognized as Academic All Mid-South Conference. The distinction is reserved for student-athletes with a sophomore or higher class ranking and a 3.25 and above grade point average. Chesser, Adrienne Bartlett, Stephanie Beatrice, Amanda Bolton, Layne Bush, Kelsey Barbato, Garnett and Michael Bailey all earned the honor.
The annual MSC Champion of Character Awards were swept by Tigers this year, as Chesser and Garnett were each given the high honor.
Chesser Named Conference Runner of the Week (11-4-2009)

Ky. -- Georgetown College's Britney Chesser is the Mid-South
Conference Female Cross Country Runner of the Week, the conference
announced on Monday.
The weekly conference award is the fifth this season for Chesser.
The senior from Louisville captured the Late Knight's Run hosted by Kentucky Christian University to earn Mid-South Conference Women's Runner of the Week. The Louisville senior ran the 5,000 meter course in a time of 19 minutes and 31 seconds to beat the 21-woman field.
Chesser Honored for Fourth Week in a Row (10-7-2009)
Louisville, Ky. -- Georgetown College's Britney Chesser is the Mid-South Conference Female Cross Country Runner of the Week.
Chesser
continues to dominate the weekly award with her fourth straight honor this
season.
She finished 10th at the Greater Louisville Classic to earn the women's runner of the week award. The Louisville native finished the 5,000 meter course in a time of 19:09 to earn a top-10 finish in the 298-woman field.
Chesser helped the Tigers to a 23rd place finish in the 35-team field.
Chesser Named Runner of the Week for Third Consecutive Time (9-30-2009)

Cross Country Female Runner of the Week, the conference announced on
Monday.
The weekly award is Chesser's third straight this season.
Chesser won her third straight event with a win in her home event. The Louisville senior finished the 5,000 meter course in a time of 20 minutes and 40 seconds to earn the MSC Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week.
Chesser's finish helped the Tigers finished second in the Georgetown College Invitational.
Tigers Sweep Meet, Conference Awards (9-22-2009)
Louisville, Ky. -- Georgetown College's Britney Chesser and Luke Garnett are the Mid-South Conference Cross Country Runners of the Week for the week ending Sept. 19, the conference announced on Monday.
Chesser earns her second consecutive conference weekly award, while Garnett picks up his first of the season.
Chesser dominated the field once again in a win at the Berea College Invitational to earn the MSC Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week. The Louisville native ran the 5,000 meter course in 19 minutes and 45 seconds to beat her nearest competitor by 38 seconds.
Chesser helped the Tigers to a second place finish at the 10-team event.
Garnett captured the men's race at Berea to earn the MSC Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week. The Cynthiana, Ky., native, finished the 8,000 meter course in 27:27 to win by nine seconds.
Chesser Wins Centre Invitational; Selected as Conference Runner of the Week (9-15-2009)
Louisville, Ky. --Georgetown College's Britney Chesser is the Mid-South Conference Cross Country Female Runner of the Week for the week ending Sept. 12, the conference announced on Monday.
Chesser earns her first conference honor of the season.
The Louisville senior won the Centre College Invitational, for the fourth year in a row, to earn the women's runner of the week award. Chesser finished the 5,000 meter course in a time of 19:31.13 to win by 49 seconds over her nearest competitor.
Chesser helped the Tigers to a second place finish in the eight-team field.
In addition to the conference selection, she has also been named the Hockensmith Student-Athlete of the Week.
