2009 Football Team
Tigers Remain Undefeated at Home (10-29-2009)
Georgetown College remained perfect at home
with a shutout win over Pikeville College on Thursday,
45-0.
The Tigers scored on their second possession of the game when Mike Lewis connected to Chris Gohman for a 34-yard touchdown play. Georgetown never looked back, improving to 6-3 on the season and 3-2 in the Mid-South Conference East division.
Head Coach Bill Cronin was happy to have the opportunity to ease a couple of key players who had been on his injured list back onto the field, including Alex Matthews, who came in at quarterback after being out with an injury that occurred in the second game of the year.
"It was good to see Alex back in for some healthy minutes," said Cronin. "We had an opportunity to get some valuable game time for young and injured players."
Lewis finished the night 14 of 19 for 199 passing yards and three touchdowns while Matthews was 8 of 12 in the air and 86 yards.
Defensively, the Bears' Anson Cunningham led both teams with 15 tackles, six solo. Georgetown was led by two freshmen, Jake Conner who tallied eight total tackles and Andrew Jones who added six, including two for a loss of nine yards.
The Tigers will host top-ten Lambuth on Nov. 7. Kickoff is set for 1:00 and Georgetown will celebrate senior day at Toyota Stadium.
Georgetown Wins on the Road (10-10-2009)
South Point, Ohio – It took just five plays for Georgetown College to take a 14-0 lead that turned into a 49-9 win over Kentucky Christian University on Saturday.
"I thought we played really well coming out of the gate, played relaxed and really clicked," said head coach Bill Cronin.
Offensively, the Tigers' senior wingback Ted Sberna found the endzone repeatedly, with five rushing touchdowns on 13 carries. Quarterback Mike Lewis threw for a total of 158 yards with no interceptions.
Kentucky Christian's Bo Dailey led by teams on the ground, finishing the day with 129 yards on 14 carries.
Next up for Georgetown is a homecoming date with the University of the Cumberlands on Oct. 17. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. at Toyota Stadium.
"I think we are confident going into a big ballgame next week," said Cronin. "Cumberlands is a fine football team and has a lot going in their direction. They will try to come in and spoil our homecoming and we can't let that happen."
Tigers' Comeback Falls Short (10-3-2009)
Wise, Va. – Georgetown College fell just short of a stylish comeback, losing at the University of Virginia at Wise by a score of 28-21 on Saturday.
The
Tigers, who overcame a 14-0 halftime score, were down 28-21 with 37 seconds
left in the game and looked to score but Mike Lewis’ pass was intercepted at
the five-yard line by Virginia-Wise’s Marcus Bratton. It was Lewis’ fourth
interception on the day.
Georgetown didn’t find the endzone until 1:57 remaining in the third quarter, when freshman fullback Dustin May scored on a one-yard run. That started the Tiger late surge, with Lewis scoring on a 16-yard run with 12:56 to go in the fourth quarter before senior running back Nik Blair scored on a one-yard run with 8:08 left in the contest. Lewis finished the day 10-of-25, passing for 161 yards but four turnovers, including the costly final pass.
UVA-Wise was paced by senior quarterback Brad Robbins, who was 13-of-21 passing for 265 yards and three touchdowns, including a 65-yard pass to Jason Lovett to put the Highland Cavaliers up 21-0 with 5:37 remaining in the third quarter.
Georgetown senior running back Ted Sberna (shown above) had 18 carries for 158 yards for the Tigers and was named one of the College Fanz players of the game. The Cavaliers’ Robbins was also selected by the College Fanz NAIA Football Game of the Week broadcast team. Each school’s athletic fund was presented a $1,000 donation by College Fanz in recognition of the outstanding players of the game
The Tigers fell to 3-2 on the year and 1-1 in Mid-South Conference play while Virginia-Wise evened things up at 3-3 and 2-1. Next up for Georgetown is Kentucky Christian University on Saturday. The game will be played in South Point, Ohio and kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.

Tigers Upset No. 10 Union (9-24-2009)
Georgetown, Ky. -- Georgetown College pulled out a to-the-wire upset as the Tigers beat No. 10 Union 21-15 on Thursday night at Toyota Stadium.
Head coach Bill Cronin was thrilled with the win and said his team enjoyed playing in the sloppy conditions.
“Union is a very talented team, who plays with their heart. Tonight was the first time the Tigers played true Tiger football in a while. We had great support tonight and a lot of fun out there on the field.”
The Tigers (3-1, 1-0) put themselves on the board first with a Bennett Gatto two-yard run seven minutes into the game. Kicker Cole Richards finished with the extra point.
The Tiger defense proved to be a big difference throughout the game, includig the first quarter, as Georgetown stopped Union on four consecutive trips before allowing the Bulldogs to put themselves in the endzone with a 39-yard pass from Mike Brinkley to Demetrius Davis. A Chad Boyington kick tied things up at seven just into the second quarter.
The Bulldogs struke once more with just 17 seconds left in the
half when Brinkley connected with Rolando Dyer for a 30-yard
touchdown. The extra point was no good and the Bulldogs
finshed the half with a 13-7 lead.
With the rain pouring down in the second half, the wet grounds made it extremely difficult to handle the ball and by game's end, both teams had fumbled twice.
After freshman fullback Dustin May's two-yard score gave the Tigers a narrow 14-13 lead halfway through the third quarter, defensive back Nick Schickel came up big for the second week in a row.
Union had the chance to gain the lead with a field goal attempt with just under three minutes to go in the period. But Schickel blocked the kick and teammate Cody Williams (shown above, photo courtesy of Steve Blake) recovered with a gain of 25 yards. That set up the drive of the game that extended into the fourth quarter - a 14 play possession, covering 75 yards, and resulting in a second touchdown by May, this time on a one-yard punch into the endzone.
Union’s offense was forced to punt on the next possession and Georgetown set up a chance for a field goal. But another blocked punt, this time in Union's favor, was recovered in the endzone by Jordan Gilliam and resulted in a safety for what would be the last score of the night.
But the excitement didn't end there.
With just two minutes left on the clock, the Tigers opted not to punt, needing just a yard. Quarterback Mike Lewis was sacked by Michael Gold, giving Union possession on the Georgetown 26-yard line. After converting a first down play and putting the Bulldogs at the 14 yard line, Brinkley spiked the ball to stop the clock, wasting a crucial down. Georgetown then held the Bulldogs for three consecutive plays to get the ball back and run out the clock.
Georgetown was led defensively by Schickel and freshman Patrick VanSant, who both tallied five solo tackles, while Union was led by William Roundtree and Jacob Crothers, each with ten.
Union fell to 2-2 on the year and 1-1 in the Mid-South Conference East division.
Next up for the Tigers is a matchup with UVA-Wise on Saturday Oct. 3. Kick off is set for 1:30 EST.
Cox Named MSC Special Teams Player of the Week (9-22-2009)
Louisville, Ky. -- Georgetown College's Mike Cox is the Mid-South Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 19, the conference announced on Monday.
Cox takes the honor after pinning Webber International University inside the 20 yard line three times and averaging 43.3 yards per punt in Georgetown's 21-14 win on Saturday. At the end of the day, the Huntsville, Ala. senior tallied 260 yards in six punts.
The Tigers rank 24th in the NAIA in punting yards per attempt with a 37.9 yard average. Georgetown is 2-1 on the season coming into this weekend's conference game against No. 10 Union College. Kickoff at Toyota Stadium is set for 7:00 p.m.
Tigers Win in Overtime Style (9-19-2009)
Georgetown,
Ky.-- It took an overtime for Georgetown College to win the first home
game of the year, as the Tigers snatched away a 21-14 win over Webber
International on Saturday and improved to 2-1 on the year.
Webber International (0-4) won the coin toss and chose to kick the ball to Georgetown. It didn’t take long for the Tigers to score when, in the first possession, Tyler Hancock’s 32-yard pass to Dustin Menetrey put Georgetown on the board. Cole Richards put it through the uprights for the extra point.
The Warriors looked to tie the game just before the end of the half, but Georgetown linebacker Ryan Ball sacked quarterback Terrence Moise for a loss of seven yards, allowing the Tigers to take over on downs and take the 7-0 lead into the half.
In the third quarter, Webber tied things up with 8:45 left when Taylor Atwood carried the ball in for a four-yard score.
Tiger senior Ted Sberna received the punt at the start of the fourth quarter and looked as though he scored on the long run, but an official called him out of bounds at the Webber 19. Mike Lewis, who played as starting quarterback last season before being moved to wide receiver as a senior, was at home in the pocket and then ran the ball in on the option with 9:50 remaining in the fourth, followed by the extra point by Richards. Georgetown then led 14-7.
But the Warriors would not go away. With two minutes remaining in the game, Moise carried the ball for 13 yards, scoring a touchdown, followed by an extra point, to tie the game. After Georgetown was forced to punt on the next possession, Webber marched down the field and attempted a 37-field goal for the win, but it was no good, resulting in the first overtime in Georgetown’s Head Coach Bill Cronin’s career.
Georgetown took possession first and, on the first play, Sberna ran the ball for a gain of 19 yards. Lewis then handed the ball off to Bennett Gatto for a one yard gain before the next play when Gatto scored. The extra point by Richards was good and it was Webber International’s turn to tie things up again.
The drive came short when Ball intercepted the ball on the fourth down at the two-yard line, and giving the Tigers the dramatic win.
Georgetown’s Mike Cox had crucial punts throughout the game. His six punts tallied 260 yards, with a long of 38, and the senior pinned the opponent inside the 20, three times.
Webber’s Jamal Rodman led all receivers with six catches for 66 yards.
Georgetown now has the quick task of preparing for Union College, as the Tigers host the Bulldogs on Thursday night. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.

Parker Named MSC Special Teams Player of the Week (9-1-2009)
LOUISVILLE,
Ky. — Georgetown College's Cody Parker has been named the
Mid-South Conference
Special Teams Player of the Week.
Parker, a freshman punter from Cincinnati, averaged more than 36 yards per punt, including a long of 56 yards to earn the weekly award. In his first collegiate game, Parker pinned the TIgers' opponent, William Penn University, inside the 20 yard line three times, helping Georgetown win the season opener 22-14.
Georgetown enjoys an open week and will next travel to Lebanon, Tenn. to take on the Cumberland University Bulldogs on Sept. 12. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. EST. Tigers Win Big River Bowl over William Penn 22-14 (8-29-2009)
Dyersburg, Tenn. — Georgetown College started the year off on a high note, as the Tigers won 22-14 over William Penn University in the inaugural Big River Bowl.
The
Tigers struck first during their second drive of the game when junior
fullback Bennett Gatto ran it in from two yards out followed by freshman
Cole Richards' successful extra point to make it 7-0. The Statesmen
evened things up quickly on the next possession with a 20-yard run by
quarterback Ryan VanDalen.
In the second quarter, Georgetown's new starting quarterback, Alex Matthews, connected on an 18-yard pass with Rob Madon to give the Tigers a 13-7 lead after an unsuccessful extra point attempt. Midway through the third quarter Georgetown settled with a field goal by Richards, a 30-yarder.
"We had a great effort from all of our freshmen that were out there
today," said Bill Cronin, in his 13th year as head coach at Georgetown.
"It was great to see our rookie kicker (Richards) and punter, (Cody Parker)
who had a long punt of 57 yards, and they did it under pressure."
Big River Bowl MVP, Alex Matthews
Another newcomer Cronin was pleased with was left tackle Robby Logan, who got his first collegiate start and played the entire game. "These rookies matured in front of our eyes out there and we are really pleased with their efforts."
Late in the third quarter, the Tigers found themselves pinned at their own 1-yard line but made two significant first downs, including a pass from Matthews to Kaelin Ammons to get out of the dangerous territory. Then came the longest play in the season opener when Matthews scrambled and threw a long pass to Ammons, who broke a couple of tackles and scored on a 71-yard play.
"Alex was rushed out of the pocket and that is a drill we have worked on quite a bit. It was just great to see them execute on that play," Cronin said.
William Penn had a chance to tie it up in the third quarter but VanDalen was tripped up at the two-yard line and the loose ball resulted in a touchback. The turnover, combined with two unsportsmanlike conduct calls, gave the Tigers the ball on the 50-yard line and, just as importantly, the momentum.
Defensively, Cronin's team "started slowly but picked up confidence as the game went on" and included two interceptions by Nick Schickel and David Gardner. "We made some adjustments early on and I thought we played really well defensively."
The Statesmen answered with a long play of their own just minutes later when VanDalen connected with Bernard Luster for a 60-yard touchdown.
Matthews was named the most valuable player of the bowl.
Next up for the Tigers is a road trip to Cumberland University on Sept. 12
after an off week. "This is a great win for us and it would have been a
really long two weeks if we didn't have the 'w'. Now that we have it
under our belt we can really focus," said Cronin. "We have a big part
of our development ahead of us in these next two weeks."

Black Defeats Orange in Annual Spring Football Game (4-23-09)
GEORGETOWN, Ky.--It
was a classic battle of defense versus offense in the annual Orange and
Black Spring Football Game. Head coach Bill Cronin put all of his
offensive unit on the orange team and his defense on the black, with the
defense getting the best of the offense by a score of 54-48.
The offense led at the half 34-27, but the defense came back strong in the third quarter, after an interception by Nick Schickel resulted in a touchdown.
The scoring was anything but traditional, as the defense racked up points in big plays including loss of yardage, third and fourth down stops and turnovers throughout the night. The spring game completes the off-season practice schedule for the Tigers. The first game of the 2009 season will be at the Big River Bowl in Dyersburg, Tenn. where Georgetown will face William Penn.
