Decatur, Ala. —The Georgetown College Tigers finished a special year with a 5-4 loss to Bethel (Tenn.) in the NAIA National Softball Tournament on Sunday.

Unfortunately, it wasn't enough, as Bethel tied things up in the bottom of the sixth with a run by Brittany Edmonds after she hit a single to begin the inning and advanced on two other Wildcat hits.

During the next at bat, the Wildcats brought junior Amber Metzger to the mound.  After Pamela Hardesty grounded out, Kendall Lawson was hit by a pitch but was then caught stealing second, followed by a strike out to end a quick inning.  Bethel's Whitney Taylor scored the winning run on an Edmonds base hit to leftfield.

The Tigers end the year with an overall record of 31-11-1 and lose four seniors:  Samantha Barmore (pitcher), Jessica Craddock (first base), Sarah Gronefeld (catcher), and Victoria Witt (pitcher).

Tiger Softball Capture Mid-South Conference Championship

Georgetown, KY--
Georgetown College Tiger Softball is headed to the NAIA National Tournament in Decatur, Ala. after capturing the Mid-South Conference Tournament title on Saturday.

The Tigers put three big games and 26 innings together to come out of the loser's bracket of the double-elimination tournament on their home field.  The first win, a 5-4 victory over Lindsey Wilson, took nine innings to avenge a Friday loss to the Blue Raiders.

The semi-final game was a top-seed matchup with Campbellsville.  Georgetown scored four runs in the top of the tenth inning to win 7-4 behind the arms of five pitchers:  Brittany Gunther, Michelle Dresselhaus, Victoria Witt and Samantha Wilson.  Gunther got the win after pitching the first four innings and Wilson the save. Sophomore third baseman Whitney Ealey hit a two-run homer to leftfield in the ninth, the first of two on the night.

Georgetown and Campbellsville then faced-off for an exciting championship game that ended with the Georgetown 5-3 upset..  Scoreless in the bottom of the third, Campbellsville's A.J. Clemmons hit a homerun to make it 1-0.  Georgetown took the next at-bat to go up 4-1, including Ealey's second homerun, a two run shot to centerfield. Campbellsville followed with two runs in the bottom of the inning for a 4-3 score.

"To put three games together like these three games, against these opponents, was really special," said head coach Thomas Thornton.  "These were games against Lindsey Wilson who beat us the past two times we faced them and then a tough, tough top-seeded Campbellsville team.  I am just so happy with the solid play of our team from top to bottom."

The Tigers will now await the NAIA National Tournament brackets to see their pool play opponents.  The 32 team tournament, to be held May 14-20 will be played at the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex.

Tiger Softball Cracks Preseason NAIA Coaches Poll (2-5-09)

The Georgetown College Softball Team will begin the 2009 season with a national ranking, as the Tigers entered the year at No. 22 in the preseason coaches poll released last week.

The Tigers finished 2008 with an overall record of 36-15 and an appearance in the NAIA Region XI Tournament.  Georgetown was No. 23 in the final 2008 poll.

Head Coach Thomas Thornton knows his team will be tested early, as the Tigers will begin play on February 15 versus No. 17 Martin Methodist and will also face No. 6 Mobile and No. 11 Lee University within the first month.

"When I first started coaching I developed a philosophy of paying attention to who we were playing at the beginning of the year in order for us to be better at the end when it matters," said Thornton.  "For that reason I schedule tough teams early on so we know where we need to get.  We will not only get better playing them but, if we play them well, it will get us some respect."

Softball Inks Two Signees (1-23-09)

Georgetown College Softball is proud to welcome the additions of two signees for the 2009-2010 season, Miranda Buchanan and Shauna Gramig.

Buchanan, a senior pitcher from Western Hills High in Frankfort, was named Second Team All State last season. "Miranda is a hard working young lady who will fit in well at Georgetown," said Tigers Head Coach Thomas Thornton.  "She brings a good work ethic and strong pitching skills to our program and is a quality person and a good student.  We are lucky to have her."

Also a senior, Gramig is a catcher for Shelby County High and will be considered for several positions on the Tiger team.  "Shauna will compete at catcher right away but we also expect to look at her for depth at other spots," said Thornton.  Competing in a fall tournament with her club team, the Louisville Stunners, she hit well against some current Mid-South Conference pitchers, including nabbing a homerun.

Shauna Gramig signs her letter of intent as Tiger Coach Thomas Thornton, her parents Kevin and Dawn and Shelby County High Coach Kelly Cable look on.
