Women's Tennis to Play in the NAIA National Tournament  (5-5-08)

Georgetown College Women's Tennis has earned the right to play for a national championship for the first time since the NAIA team format began in 2000.

This is not the team's first appearance in the tournament, as Georgetown played in both 2000 and 2001 as the host school. The Tigers currently own a No. 14 national ranking and have an overall record of 13-7, with all seven losses coming at the hands of top 20 teams.

"We have played a very strong schedule and our seven losses were to EKU, No. 4 Lindsey Wilson (three times), No. 7 Berry, then No. 10 Brenau and then No. 15 Northwood, so our schedule has been difficult," explained head coach Kevin Calhoun.  "But we also beat three teams in the top 25 including No. 10 Southern Nazarene. I think we are ready for anything that we are going to see next week."

Calhoun said he doesn't expect an intimidation factor to be present when his team takes to the courts.  "Despite losing to Lindsey Wilson three times, we competed really well with them all three times and our players aren't the intimidated types." 

Georgetown is led by junior All-American Emily Kerrick (Lexington, Ky.), who is ranked No. 25 in singles and freshman Adrienne Bartlett (Louisville, Ky.) who has been as high as No. 31 in the country.  Combined, the duo competes as No. 13 in NAIA doubles.  The roster also includes Jackie Cobb (freshman, Washington Courthouse, Oh.), Charis Gambill (junior, Ashland, Ky.), Megan Mars (sophomore, Harrogate, Tn.), Bianca Rugimbana (sophomore, Brisbane, Australia), Megan Watts (senior, Versailles, Ky.) and Sarah Yost (junior, Manchester, Ky.).

The NAIA National Tennis Championships will be played May 12-16 in Mobile, Alabama at the Mobile Tennis Center.  Brackets will be released on Wednesday by 6:00 p.m. 

Student-Athlete Athletics Council Awards Annual GC's on Sunday  (4-28-08)

The Georgetown College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted the third-annual GC Awards on Sunday, April 27th in the Georgetown College Chapel. Former Tiger and current WKYT-TV chief meteorologist T.G. Shuck served as master of ceremonies and gave student-athletes an idea of how much they will appreciate the foundation that athletics helps to form in their lives when they are in their chosen careers.

Shown left: Juniors Jason Frilling (baseball) and Katie Filiatreau (basketball) were named Mr. and Ms. Georgetown for their leadership and accomplishments in the classroom and in their sport and are congratulated by Director of Athletics Eric Ward.

Four Women's Tennis Student-Athletes in National Rankings (4-18-08)

The most recent International Tennis Association rankings have been released and senior Emily Kerrick leads the Tigers with a career-high 25th ranking in singles play. Kerrick and doubles partner Adrienne Bartlett are ranked twelfth, while Bartlett is at No. 43 in single play. Teammates Sarah Yost and Bianca Rugimbana are No. 23 in doubles play.

The Tigers finished the Mid-South Conference Tournament today losing in the finals to Lindsey Wilson 5-2. The men also fell in the finals to Lindsey Wilson by a score of 5-0. Both teams will advance to the Region XI Tournament to be held at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. Tournament play will begin on Thursday, April 24 with the men facing Bethel College and the women will take on Lindsey Wilson College for the third time in just over a week.

Tennis Teams Honored at MSC Banquet: Calhoun Coach of the Year, Carcamo Co-Player of the Year and Yost Champions of Character Award Recipient (4-17-08)

The Georgetown College Tennis teams racked up a lot of hardware at the annual Mid-South Conference banquet held in Louisville on Wednesday night. The highest honors the conference gives went to Sarah Yost, as she was named the 2008 Women's Tennis Champion of Character Award recipient voted on by all conference coaches. Head Coach Kevin Calhoun was named the Men's Tennis Coach of the Year and Matias Carcamo was honored as the Co-Player of the Year along with Lindsey Wilson College's Freddy Luciani.

MSC Tennis Championship Brackets Released (4-16-08)

The 2008 Mid-South Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Tournament will be held this Thursday and Friday, April 17-18, at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center in Louisville, KY.  Updated brackets are now available for both the men and women, with Lindsey Wilson and Georgetown College the top two seeds in both.

Action gets underway tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. when the University of the Cumberlands and Pikeville College square off in the men's 3/6 match, while Campbellsville University and WVU Tech will meet as the four-five seeds. On the women's side, Campbellsville and Tech will meet in the 4/5 match at 9:30 a.m. for the right to take on Lindsey Wilson tomorrow afternoon.
