Tiger Volleyball Moves Up in the Polls (9-10-08)
Georgetown
College Volleyball has had the opportunity to size up the competition over
the past two weeks and despite five losses to ranked opponents, two
important wins have moved the Tigers up one spot in this week's NAIA
Coaches' Poll to No. 10.
The Tigers first traveled to California to face four of the NAIA's top five
in the Concordia University Labor Day Tournament, knocking off No. 5 Azusa
Pacific 3-0 and playing tough against No. 1 Fresno Pacific, No. 4 Biola and
No. 3 Concordia.
Georgetown then followed with a trip to the Columbia, Mo. for the Best
Western Classic where they were able to grab a 3-2 win over No. 6 Columbia
College but fell to No. 22 Bellevue and No. 15 Lindenwood. Senior
setter Jenna Gronotte and junior All-American Erica Janzsen were named to
the classic's all tournament team.
"I really didn't know how the losses would affect us in the polls," said
Head Coach Jeff Hulsmeyer. "With quality wins but a few losses to
teams ranked lower than us it was a toss up but it is nice to see that our
strength of schedule is paying off."
The Tigers opened up conference play on Tuesday at home with a 3-0 win over the University of the Cumberlands and improved their overall record to 4-5. Next up is a trip to conference rival No. 17 Campbellsville on Tuesday.
Tiger Volleyball Ranked No. 11 in NAIA Coaches' Poll (8-20-08)
The Georgetown College Tiger Volleyball team will open the season with a No. 11 national ranking and a trip to the west coast that will challenge their spot.
The Tigers will travel to Irvine, Ca. to play in the Concordia Labor Day Tournament the last weekend of August. The competition will be tough as Georgetown will face three of the final four teams from last year's national championship in the first three matches of the year - Fresno, Biola and host Concordia. Head coach Jeff Hulsmeyer has intentionally crafted this year's schedule to let his team know what is needed to be among the best. By season's end, the Tigers will have faced eight of the top ten in the poll released Tuesday.
"We'll know where we stand early but if you want your program to be consistently at the top then those are the teams you have to play."
The Tigers are led by junior All-American Erica Janszen, who says the team is working hard in the preseason in many ways. "It's not just about what is getting done on the court," said the outside hitter. "We are also working hard right now to gel as a team and make sure things get started off the way we want."
Chemistry is a little easier for the team that lost no seniors last year and ended the season at 39-6. "Its very humbling to know that we are respected by our opponents with this ranking," said Hulsmeyer. "Some of the tough teams we played last year now know that we have a nice team with everyone returning. They know we are a quality team that will be a quality opponent for them."
The first regular season ranking will be released on Tuesday, September 9.
