Parent's Guide to Athletic Insurance - Print Sheet(Click Here)

Georgetown College Athletics is committed to providing quality health care to its student-athletes. While most care is obtained on-campus by our staff of certified athletic trainers, certain injuries require further medical evaluation by our core of team physicians. When off-campus care is needed, health care costs and responsibilities become a factor.

In order to help you better understand your responsibilities, a list of commonly asked questions and their respective answers have been outlined for you. Please feel free to contact us if further questions or needs arise.

What is athletic insurance?

Athletic insurance is similar to your own primary health insurance…a policy to help defray the costs of medical expenses. Georgetown College has purchased athletic insurance for its student athletes. This policy is excess only.

What do you mean by excess insurance?

This insurance is not for your own personal use. It is insurance that is used by the College only under certain conditions.

What if I don’t have primary insurance for my son/daughter?

If the injury is shown through documentation to be athletic related, and it meets the criteria of AIG then this insurance would pick up pertinent bills. Again, it cannot be used for personal use.

Is coverage guaranteed?

Coverage of an injury will only be guaranteed once all medical documentation has been filed, reviewed, and then approved through AIG.

What is NOT covered by this insurance?

  • Illnesses (i.e. flu, mono)
  • Pre-existing injuries
  • Chronic and/or over-use injuries
  • Injuries incurred other than during an organized practice or competition (i.e. pickup games, intramurals, dorm activities)
  • Bills incurred beyond 12 months from the initial date of injury

How long does coverage last?

The coverage has a one year benefit period. So if an athlete is injured on September 1, the coverage will be good until August 31 of the following year. Any bills incurred after that date would become your responsibility.

Once an injury has occurred, how do I file the claim/bills?

First, make sure you thoroughly complete a Parent/Athlete Information Form each summer and return it to the insurance coordinator. Second, once you receive a bill attach it to the respective EOB (Explanation of Benefits) statement from your insurance company. Then mail the bill and EOB to the insurance coordinator at the College.

What is an EOB?

EOB stands for Explanation of Benefits. It is a statement that your insurance company uses to explain what charges were covered and/or denied for a particular date of service.
