Georgetown College wrapped up its 2011 NAIA Football Championship Series Semifinals berth with a 26-14 win over Saint Francis Saturday at Toyota Stadium. Then the No. 3 Tigers (12-0) waited to learn their fate. Would they host or be on the road?
The NAIA just announced they will head to Montana for a showdown with No. 2 Carroll College. No. 5 St. Xavier out of Illinois will head to No. 1 Marian University in the other matchup.
CC (12-1) made a late, fourth-quarter drive that snuffed out the Tigers hopes of hosting Saturday. The Fighting Saints final drive put them up 17-14 and earned them the home field advantage for the third straight week.
This is the third meeting for the two storied programs - nine national championships between the two schools. GC took the first two on its way to back-to-back perfect seasons and national championships, while Carroll won the third in the 2002 finals.
The Fighting Saints have six national crowns and are the current defending champions. The lone blemish on their record is a loss to Eastern Oregon the second game of the season. The two met again later and CC won, 31-21.
The Tigers are undefeated and back in the semifinals for the first time since 2004. This is the sixth time in 15 seasons GC has advanced this far and five out of six years during the 1999-2004 span of two national titles and two runner-up finishes. Under Bill Cronin the Tigers are 22-8 in postseason play.
