Men's Tennis - Tue, Apr. 3, 2012

Georgetown College's Benjamin Aspillaga has been battling in the top spot for men's tennis and all his hardwork is paying off and catching the attention of the Mid-South Conference.

The junior from Santiago, Chile is 10-7 in singles and 9-8 in doubles. He has recently won three of his four singles matches - all wins inside the league. Just this past week he went 4-0 (doubles and singles) to earn MSC Men's Tennis Player of the Week.

"He has been so solid for us all year long," said GC coach Jessica Cunningham. "He is right there in every match against a lot of ranked opponents. Early he was losing those matches, now he's finding ways to win them."

He started the week with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory over St. Catharine College's Pablo Zamora at the No. 1 spot. He paired with freshman Chris Bartlett to win 8-4 over Andre Jacomini and Ethan Rowton in the top doubles match against the Patriots as well.

He followed that up with a 6-0, 6-1 rolling over University of Virginia College at Wise's Zach Holcomb. Bartlett and Aspillaga defeated Holcomb and Chase Cupp 8-2 in the doubles portion.

The last Georgetown men's tennis player to receive the weekly conference honor was the junior's brother Eugenio. The then senior dropped just six games in three singles matches the week of April 6, 2009. He also won three doubles matches without dropping a game. His wins were over University of the Cumberlands, Ohio Dominican University and Indiana Wesleyan University.
