Georgetown College seemed destined for a third overtime
this season when Union's Stephanie Burton was turning away shot after shot in
the second half Wednesday. But the Tigers (7-3) continued to shot and finally
off a corner kick restart by Anna Ayers found the back of the net. Becca
Dietrich scored her first goal of the season with just more than five minutes
remaining for the 1-0 win in Georgetown.
The Bulldogs (7-4-1) also had their chances but a
combination of a solid back line - Dietrich, Caitlin Williams, Tara Joseph and
Megan Melanson - as well as good play in the goal from Kelsey Givens and Lauren
Leick stonewalled UC for the team's fifth shutout of the season.
"What an amazing game," said GC coach Leah Crews
Castleman. "We met adversity head on and overcame it. When Kelsey went down,
Lauren stepped in goal and kept the game at zero to the half. Then with Kelsey
back in, our defense turned it up another notch to help Kelsey.
"What a goal by Becca. After so many good shots, we could
have dropped our heads, but that isn't us or this team and we knew something would
eventually break through. Anna had great corners tonight, hitting beautiful
balls, and I just knew one of those would be the catalyst for the offense."
Georgetown returns to action and Mid-South Conference
play 1 pm Saturday at Cumberland University.
