Georgetown College volleyball hosted Xavier University at
Louisiana in the NAIA National Tournament First Round Saturday. The No. 13
Tigers (34-3) had a scare early against the Gold Nuggets (22-8), but rallied
for the 23-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-20 win in Davis-Reid Alumni Gym.
GC battled a defensive minded opponent, but finally found
ways for the team's powerful hitters to find holes.
Allyson Wilbourn led the way with 18 kills, while
Caraline Maher chipped in with 14 and Kathryn Smith 11. For the match the
Tigers hit .333, while holding XULA to .137. Taylor Reuther was the long Gold
Nugget in double-digit kills with 13.
Rebekah Moore led the defensive stance with 24 digs and
fellow senior Lindsey Wise added 13. Freshman defensive specialist Kristen
Schellhaas added 12.
The tandem setters of Lindsey Martindale (26) and
Stephanie Gurren (22) handled dishing out the ball well, helping the Tigers
offense to get on track. Xavier's Franziska Pirkl had 36 assists and 14 digs.
GC punches its ticket to Sioux City, Iowa for pool-play
and possibly elimination round all starting on Nov. 27. The Tigers will learn
their opponents in the round-robin portion of the tournament around 6 pm
