Women's Basketball - Sat, Dec. 29, 2012

Georgetown College women's basketball notched a double-digit lead over a ranked opponent in Huntingdon College's opening day of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. The No. 21 Tigers (7-5) handed a 72-55 defeat to No. 24 Faulkner University (12-3).

"It was a solid night for us," said GC coach Andrea McCloskey. "I think we are seeing what we have now that we have everyone together. The trip to Puerto Rico really helped us gel."

Kourtney Tyra, third leading scorer on the team averaging 11.9 points per game, shed her recent shooting slump with a team-high 19 points in the win. She also dished out six assists and grabbed five rebounds. Lizza Jonas and Andrea Howard, averaging 16.4 and 12.0 ppg respectively, each chipped in with 15 points, while Jessica Foster had 10.

Jonas hit a pair of free throws early in the game and the Tigers never trailed. The Eagles scored to tie it 4-4 before GC rolled off 14 unanswered to put the game away. Faulkner pulled within six a couple of times in the second half, but could never get closer.

GC returns to action 7 pm Saturday against Belhaven.
