Georgetown College volleyball opened home play with a straight-set win over Bluefield College. The No. 7 Tigers (4-1, 1-0 Mid-South Conference) only struggled in one set in the 25-10, 25-23, 25-12 win.
"We had a good crowd and it was a good night to open in Davis-Reid Alumni Gym," said GC coach Nick Griffin. "We lost our focus a bit in the second set, but we battle through and took care of business the rest of the way."
The Rams (0-3, 0-1) tallied more points in that set than in the other two combine, but a kill by MSC Player of the Week Allyson Wilbourn made it 24-23 and Kristen Schellhaas served out the match.
Caraline Maher led the team in the attacking category with 10 kills on 12 attempts for a blistering .833 hitting percentage. Lindsey Martindale had 22 assists and Schellhaas finished with 15 digs.
Georgetown returns to action in less than 24 hours against MSC foe University of Pikeville.
"This is a big week as far as number of matches go," Griffin said. "We are going to test our mental strength and conditioning a bit this week."
The Tigers will play host to its first of two tournaments in the Rumpke Invitational Friday and Saturday. A total of 18 matches between the two days as teams play two a day. Action starts 11 am Friday and 9:30 am Saturday. GC plays at 1 and 7 on Friday and 11:30 am and 5:30 pm Saturday.
