It was set for a showdown Old West style between No. 8 Georgetown College volleyball and No. 13 Lindsey Wilson College. The past two seasons these two teams have battled back and forth for control in the Mid-South Conference. Both came in Tuesday to Davis-Reid Alumni Gym with 4-0 records in conference.
Georgetown started fast, but then struggled sets two through four to hold serve. LWC got the first of two meetings with a 25-17, 21-25, 21-25, 11-25 win. The two will tangle again on Halloween in Columbia.
"We made plays at times, but could not string things together and get over the hump in those final three sets," said GC coach Nick Griffin. "It is early in a long season, and you have to be ready to learn from every situation."
Caraline Maher led the way hitting wise with 15 kills on 27 attempts for a .481 hitting percentage. The Tigers roared out with seven service aces and 10 kills in set one, but had one service ace the rest of the way and finished with a total of 40 kills.
Georgetown returns to action this weekend in the Holiday Inn Express tournament hosted by Olivet Nazarene.
The Tigers will play Cornerstone and Saint Francis Friday, 4 and 8 pm respectively. They will then turn around to play ONU Saturday 10 am and Grand View 2 pm.
