Georgetown College's Brock Messina earns Mid-South Conference Defensive Player of the Week announced Monday afternoon by the league office. The senior tallied 11 tackles against Bluefield College, including 2.5 sacks and a third tackle for loss that pushed the Rams back 23.5 yards.
Messina ranks 10th in the MSC with 7.4 tackles per game. His 17 tackles for loss leads the conference, while his 8.5 sacks are tied for the top spot.
The Rams scored just once Saturday, while the Tiger defense alone scored twice.
"You really have to give credit to our defense against Bluefield," said GC coach Bill Cronin. "They did a great job. With the circumstances on offense, we really needed that side of the ball to step up and they really did. Brock is a big part of that. He is always flying around to the ball and creating match-up problems for our opponents."
The No. 16 Tigers are 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the MSC East. They return to action on the road at Union College Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1:30 pm.
