Georgetown College football team learned its postseason fate Sunday afternoon. In a rubber match, No. 13 Tigers will travel to No. 3 Carroll College in Montana. Kickoff is set for 2:07 pm EST.
This will be the fifth meeting between the storied programs – eight national titles in the past 13 seasons and at least 11 national championship games.
The Fighting Saints came to Georgetown in 2000 and 2001 as part of the Tigers back-to-back perfect seasons and national titles. Carroll has won the most recent meetings, the 2002 finals and the 2011 semifinals.
Neal Pawsat was just a freshman in the loss in Helena, Mt. Dec. 3. Carroll picked up that win 35-3 in the cold and overcast day.
GC is 7-3, including a 5-1 second place finish in the Mid-South Conference East. The Tigers three losses come to teams that are all ranked in the Top 10 of their respective divisions and are 29-2. Two of the teams are a perfect 10-0.
Coach Bill Cronin and CC Coach Mike Van Diest are two of the all-time winningest active coaches in the NAIA. Diest, 174-27 in 15 seasons, is fourth, while Cronin, 162-37 in 17 seasons, is fifth.
"This is a huge first round game between some very tradition rich programs," Cronin said. "This should be exciting. Coach Diest does a great job and we will need to be ready to play come Saturday."
Other first round matchups: No. 1 University of the Cumberlands vs. No. 16 St. Ambrose; No. 2 Grand View vs. No. 15 Ottawa; No. 4 Baker vs. No. 13 Sterling; No. 5 Morningside vs. No. 10 Rocky Mountain; No. 6 St. Francis vs. No. 9 Faulkner; No. 7 Missouri Valley vs. No. 12 Northwestern; No. 8 Benedictine vs. No. 11 Tabor.
