Messina named MSC East Defensive POY
Georgetown College football team continues to be recognized for another exciting season. Senior Brock Messina joins a long list of talented defensive players. He led the conference in five different statistical categories, helping him earn Mid-South Conference East Division Defensive Player of the Year.
Messina is the fifth Tiger to earn the honor since 2001 and third in the past four years. Kyle Anderson started the trend again in 2010 and he was followed by Zach Goebel in 2011.
The Louisville native compiled 74 tackles, 49 of which were solo. He led the MSC in sacks (15.5) tackles for loss (24) sacks per game (1.6) tackles for loss per game (2.4) and forced fumbles per game (0.4).
His sacks per game (1.6), total sacks (15.5) and tackles for loss per game (2.4) also led the NAIA.
He had three games of double-digit tackles and four multi-sack games.
Messina's 53 tackles for loss in his career put him seventh all-time in GC history. The 269 yards lost is also seventh all-time. His 38.5 sacks are tied for third all-time with Tony Steele, eight back of Chris Hogan in second.
Joining Messina on the MSC First Team All-Conference list is Kevin Connaughton (OL), Neal Pawsat (QB), Zach Sowder (RB) and Patrick Dougherty (DL). Making the second team from Georgetown is Jesse Morrell (Slot), Grant Keller (DL), Jaylan Bailey (DB), Kody Kasey (DB) and Jarrod Combs (Punter).
Pawsat threw 157 completions for 2,177 yards and 16 touchdowns in eight games. His 7,784 yards in three seasons is fourth all-time at Georgetown. His 66 career touchdowns are also fourth all-time.
Sowder rushed for a team-high 631 yards this season. He also broke the double-digit mark for touchdowns with 10. Add to that one receiving touchdown and he has scored a team-high 66 points for Georgetown. The senior is 118 yards shy of tying Ron Railey for 10th all-time in yards.
Dougherty has 30 tackles this season with three sacks.
Morrell has tallied 233 yards on the ground this season with three touchdowns. He has eight rushing scores in four seasons. He has also caught 31 passes for 357 yards and one score this season.

Georgetown finished the season 7-3, 5-1 in the East, and head back to the NAIA Football Championship Series. The No. 13 Tigers will take on No. 3 Carroll College (10-1) in Helena, Mt. 2 pm Saturday.
