Will to win at its fullest extent is the best way to describe Georgetown College women's basketball victory over University of the Cumberlands to open Mid-South Conference action.
With 30 seconds remaining the No. 4 Tigers (3-1, 1-0) Kourtney Tyra hit Andrea Howard off a curl screen for the ninth tie of the game. Georgetown sealed the deal when Tyra missed a second free throw and Lizza Jonas pulled down the rebound. This led to two more free throws for Tyra, a spot where she rarely misses. GC handed UC (1-3, 0-1) a 76-73 loss.
"It's pleasing to see us never give up," said Tiger coach Andrea McCloskey. "It was a total team effort and not just tonight. This week practices have been the best we've had. I'm so proud that we just never gave up."
Howard finished the night with 23 points and one of the biggest shots, but the senior knows the importance of rallying from behind.
"This feels pretty awesome," Howard said. "This will be a critical win down the road. It is a confidence victory. We need to carry this on the road, a place we will be a lot for the coming weeks. When you know you can have a flat night, but as a team we trust each other and can rally back, that's huge."
The Patriots led by as many as six with 3:48 remaining, but the No. 21 ranked team could not hold on down the stretch. Georgetown scored 13 of the final 17 points.
McCloskey preaches rebounding and despite giving up 15 offensive rebounds to UC, managed to at least tie it up in the board battle by the end of the game 38-38.
Tyra chipped in with 17, including 7-of-9 from the line. Howard lit it up from deep, 4-of-5, and inches closer to her 1,000th point. Devanny King won the war on the boards with a game-high nine rebounds.
Lydia Cuff was the spark off the bench for Melissa Irvin's team in the first 20. The post had nine quick points as UC was holding leads of seven and six points. Free throws kept the Tigers around.
Jonas was the other lone GC player in double digits with 12.
Georgetown returns to action 1 pm Saturday at Indiana University Southeast.
