For the first time since the 2005-06 season, Georgetown College and University of Kentucky men's basketball teams will meet in a preseason tilt. On Nov. 7 in Rupp Arena, the two powerhouses in their own divisions will clash. The long standing history of play back in the early 1900s has Blue & White ahead 35-15 with the final meeting coming in 1938-39 season.
Georgetown started with a flare against the school just south in Lexington, winning the first six meetings and eight of the first 10. Kentucky got on a roll tallying 33-7 mark over the next two decades before the series ended.
The most recent preseason match-up between the Tigers and Wildcats came in 2005-06. Interesting side note, current Georgetown College head men's basketball coach Chris Briggs was a graduate assistant at UK for then coach Tubby Smith. UK won 85-63.
"It will be an honor to be able to play against UK," Briggs said. "It will be special to me personally as a graduate and it is where I got my start in college basketball with Bill Keightley and Tubby Smith.
"I am thrilled for our players to be able to play on the biggest stage in college basketball. We are very thankful for the opportunity from Coach (John) Calipari, as well as DeWayne Peevy. They have been a pleasure to work with in this process."
Briggs is 78-28 in three seasons on the sidelines for the Orange & Black with one national title and two quarterfinal appearances at the NAIA national tournament.
UK will also be hosting University of Pikville, another Mid-South Conference and in-state opponent.
This is the third meeting of the Bears and Wildcats, with UK winning the 2010-11 preseason game 97-66.
It marks the first time since 2004-05 that a pair of in-state schools has made up Kentucky's exhibition season.
