Waleski, Ga. – Host and top-seeded Reinhardt University used the long ball Monday to knock Georgetown College Tigers into the consolation bracket in the NAIA National Softball Championship Opening Rounds. GC fell behind 1-0 when Randi Wimpy hit a two-out solo shot. The Lady Eagles (42-8) needed no more runs, but put the game away with four in the bottom of the fifth – three coming off a homerun by Katie Rietkovich.
Kayla Williams went four and a third inning, scattering seven hits and allowing all five runs. Jessica Claxton finished it off allowing just one hit in her one and two-thirds innings.
The Tigers stranded seven in their first trip to the national tournament since 2009. The Mid-South Conference tournament champions started strong, placing two runners in scoring position with just one out. But, GC was unable to push either of those across in the top of the first and RU's Madison Luck went on shutdown mode from there. She scattered three hits in seven innings with four strikeouts.
Sandy Young, Cassidy Taylor and Taylor Shaw each picked up a hit for the Tigers, while Chelsea Riney and Young also drew walks. Shaw and Young had doubles.
Georgetown now must fit to keep playing in the double elimination tournament. It all starts 1:30 pm Tuesday against Taylor University.
