Georgetown College Tiger Football will begin the 2009 season earlier than usual and in a special way, as the Tigers have accepted an invitation to play in the inaugural Big River Bowl in Dyersburg, Tennessee on August 29, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. (EST).

Georgetown will face William Penn (Iowa) in the game that will be held at JC Sawyers Stadium.

The Statesmen finished last season with a record of 7-4 and are members of the Mid-States Football Association. Another of many firsts, it is the only time the two NAIA teams have met.

"We have great respect for both William Penn and Georgetown and are happy they have accepted our invitation," said James Counce, Sr., a retired high school coach who leads a group of local visionaries who are organizing the game. "Our selection committee is extremely excited that William Penn and Georgetown College will showcase their programs here in Tennessee."

Georgetown head coach Bill Cronin thinks the early bowl game will serve as an extra incentive during spring practice and preseason workouts. "We are really excited and think this is a special opportunity for our program. We feel like the opportunity to play an 11th game is going to benefit us all season."

For more information on the Big River Bowl, visit http://www.dyersburgfootball.com. Tickets will be presold for $10 each or will available at the gate for $15.

The first home game for the Tigers will be on September 19 versus Webber International and the Tigers will finish the regular season on the road at West Virginia Tech on November 14. Along the way, they will play a total of five games at home and six on the road.

The Tigers kickoff spring practice on Monday, March 23 and will conclude the semester with the annual Orange and Black Game to be held Thursday, April 23 at 7:00 p.m.
