Men's Basketball - Thu, Mar. 16, 2017

Georgetown College men's basketball had a tough, first round match up in the 2017 Buffalo Funds – NAIA Division I Men's Basketball Championship. The No. 15 Tigers (24-7) drew No. 18 Park University (21-8), a team just 15 minutes from downtown Kansas City, Mo. and Municipal Auditorium. None the less, Edson Avila provided the spark and GC showed a lot of grit in beating a very talented and hot Pirates team, 81-72.

"I'm proud of the toughness we showed down the stretch," said GC coach Chris Briggs. "We stepped up and made the stops we needed. Raymond (Baldwin) was solid against Xavier (Brown) – a three-time All-American – and Edson was huge."

Avila stepped off the bench as foul trouble mounted for 15 points and 12 rebounds – eight offensive. The Bronx, NY forward was not ready to go home.

"They showed clips of last year's finals and that made me mad," Avila said. "I was not trying to go home tonight. I just did what I could to help and make plays."

Avila made a free throw with 6:58 remaining to tie it at 62. Park made a run to go back up four and then Georgetown took over. The Tigers finished on a 19-5 run including 7-of-12 from the line after going 10-of-16 in the first 30-plus minutes.

GC plays William Penn 3:15 pm ET Friday.
