The Georgetown College Softball Team will begin the 2009 season with a national ranking, as the Tigers entered the year at No. 22 in the preseason coaches poll released last week.

The Tigers finished 2008 with an overall record of 36-15 and an appearance in the NAIA Region XI Tournament. Georgetown was No. 23 in the final 2008 poll.

Head Coach Thomas Thornton knows his team will be tested early, as the Tigers will begin play on February 15 versus No. 17 Martin Methodist and will also face No. 6 Mobile and No. 11 Lee University within the first month.

"When I first started coaching I developed a philosophy of paying attention to who we were playing at the beginning of the year in order for us to be better at the end when it matters," said Thornton. "For that reason I schedule tough teams early on so we know where we need to get. We will not only get better playing them but, if we play them well, it will get us some respect."
