The first-fround matches of the USTA/ITA Regional Championships the Tigers were for the most part closely contested. Emily Krick, Jose Baeza and Carlos Del Valle
all went to the third set to decide their respective matches. Of those, Baeza was the only one who was able to advance to the second round. Zach Thomas
won his first round match in straight sets, 7-6 (5), 6-1.
, Haley Hart
, Ben Aspillaga and Gustavo Echeverrķa were given byes into the second round. Each of them won in straight sets except for Echeverria, who fought hard in his match but came up just short in yet another three-set struggle, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Baeza started off strong in his second-round match against the tournament's No. 3 seed, Union College's Pierre Vernon, winning the first set 6-3. Vernon asserted himself in the next two sets to prevent the upset.
"I'm impressed with Jose's and Gustavo's debuts," Register said. "I believe they have bright futures as Tigers."
Thomas also lost to a tournament seed in the second round, Andre Santos of Lindsey Wilson, 6-1, 6-3. The men struggled in doubles, dropping two of their three opening round matches. The third was postponed until Friday due to darkness.
The women fared much better, winning all three of their opening round matches and will begin quarterfinal play on Friday.
