Both the men and women fared well in the 2010 USTA/ITA Regional Championships this past weekend in Owensboro, Ky.
The Tigers got to play against some conference foes, including Lindsey Wilson, University of the Cumberlands, Campbellsville and Cumberland University.
On the women's side, first-year head coach Layton Register
saw his doubles team of Adrienne Bartlett
and Haleigh Fellows
advance all the way to the finals. Unfortunately, they then faced No. 1 seeded Trina Slapeka and Slaviea Milanovic. The pair from Lindsey Wilson won the tournament.
GC also fared well in the singles competition, coming up just short of having the most players advance to the round of 16.
"I see our teams coming together as strong contenders in the spring," Register said.
The coach was also pleased with his youthful men's team. He had two freshman, three sophomores and a junior competiting this past weekend in Owensboro. The bunch came up one set short of having five guys advance to the round of 32. The only team to have that many advance was Union College.
