Georgetown College women's basketball team took nationally ranked Southern Polytechnic down to the wire Saturday in the 2nd Annual Andrew Elswick Memorial Tournament.
Kourtney Tyra hit a pair of free throws inside the final two minutes for a 54-53 lead; however the Hornets struck back in the final 30 and hung on for the 55-54 win.
The Tigers exploded just before the half to head into the break down three, 26-23. However, the Hornets came out strong and watched its lead balloon into a double-digit advantage.
Midway through the second half, Georgetown found its rhythm again and a Mikkah Rogers three cut the deficit to two, 44-42.
SPSU opened up another multiple possession lead, when the Tigers caught fire and eventually took the lead on Tyra's field goals.
The sophomore led all-scorers with 15 points, while Jessica Waddle added 15. Gina Beining and Waddle were named to the all-tournament team for the Tigers (3-1).
GC returns to action 6 p.m. Tuesday hosting Trevecca. Then the team will take part in its third weekend tournament at home as part of the McDonald's-Central Bank Jim Reid Classic.
The women play St. Francis on Friday and Davenport on Saturday at 6 p.m. each day. Mid-South Conference foe University of the Cumberlands is the fourth team in the tournament and will start with Davenport Friday and play St. Francis Saturday at 2 p.m. each day.
GC's men will also be in the tournament, starting 8 p.m. Friday against Embry-Riddle. Winners of Friday's game play 8 p.m. Saturday, while the losers play at 4 p.m. The 4 p.m. game on Friday is between Life University and Texas College.
