Men's Tennis - Tue, Feb. 1, 2011
Georgetown College men's tennis opened up its season against a highly talented NCAA Division I Eastern Kentucky University team this past weekend in Richmond at Greg Adams Tennis Center.
The Colonels (3-2) only two losses thus far have come at the hands of No. 1 University of Virginia and No. 24 Virginia Tech.
"Going into the match we knew this was going to be a challenge for us," GC coach Lane Orttenburger said.
Despite the 9-0 results, the rookie head coach's spirits about his team's capabilities were lifted.
"I was really proud of the way my guys competed," Orttenburger said. "We really challenged EKU in the doubles and we carried that momentum into the singles."
GC's Benjamin Aspillaga and Jose Baeza played tight with the Colonels No. 1 doubles team, before losing 8-5. The Tigers' No. 3 team of Zach Thomas and Ross Phelps also made it interesting in an 8-4 loss.
Freshman Gustavo Echeverria impressed the Tiger coach with a battle at the No. 3 singles spot. Echeverria lost 6-4, 6-1 to EKU's Phil Janz.
"Even though we lost, I left feeling good about the upcoming season," Orttenburger said. "This is definitely a result we can build on."
The coach is not shying away from challenging his young team - no seniors and only two juniors on a seven-man squad - as the Tigers travel to Morehead on Feb. 12 for their next match.
