Four weeks ago Georgetown College women's basketball team was facing a possible ninth seed as it struggled to find wins on the road.
The Tigers changed that fate with a 5-1 run in the final month of play, including road wins over University of Virginia at Wise and University of the Cumberlands. They then got a little help Saturday as Pikeville lost to Wise.
GC heads into postseason play as a No. 6 seed and will face Lindsey Wilson College in the quarterfinals Thursday at 8 p.m. in Frankfort. Women's action will be going on all day at the Frankfort Civic Center, starting with the No. 4 seeded Cumberlands battling No. 5 seeded University of Rio Grande. Tip for that game is set for 2 p.m.
Campbellsville University picked up the No. 1 seed, but its opponent and No. 2 seed Shawnee State's opponent will not be determined until after Monday night's play-in games between No. 7 seed Pikeville vs. No. 10 seed West Virginia Tech and No. 8 seed St. Catharine vs. No. 9 seed Wise.
Campbellsville will play at 4 p.m. and Shawnee State at 6 p.m.
In men's action, the Tigers opponent has yet to be determined, but they will play the lowest seed coming out of the play-in games Monday night at 8 p.m. Friday in Frankfort.
Rio, with no conference wins, is the No. 10 seed and plays No. 7 West Virginia Tech, while No. 9 Wise plays No. 8 Shawnee State. Barring any upsets, Georgetown would play No. 8 Shawnee State. However, should No. 9 or No. 10 make it through, the Tigers would get them in the quarterfinals.
Pikeville, the No. 3 seed, will start the men's quarterfinal action Friday with a 2 p.m. tip against sixth seed Campbellsville. No. 2 St. Catharine is waiting on the winners of the play-in game to find out who it will face at 4 p.m. Cumberlands, fourth seed, will play No. 5 seed LWC in the 6 p.m. game.
