Future Georgetown College football players shined during Northern Kentucky Football Coaches Association All-Star game recently. Damian Oden and Alex Connelly helped the East to a 26-18 victory over the West.
Oden came up with a momentum shifting defensive play early. East was clinging to a 7-6 lead with 1:02 showing before halftime and West marching down the field. The Holmes graduate picked off a pass, one of six by the East on the night, and returned it 37 yards for the score. An extra point later and the East had a 14-6 lead at the break.
West would not go away though, scoring 12 straight points to start the second half. Connelly then got his chance to shine. Not 30 seconds after West had taken an 18-14 lead, he hauled in a touchdown to put East back on top 20-18, a lead it would never relinquish. Unofficially, the Covington Catholic senior had six catches for 124 yards and the score.
Both players were recognized at the end of the evening with outstanding player awards - Connelly was the East's outstanding back and Oden outstanding defensive back. Each are set to join the Tigers this fall in their campaign to defend the Mid-South Conference East title and return to postseason. First game is set for 7 p.m. Sept. 3 against nationally ranked Ottawa University in Kansas.
