Georgetown College volleyball is playing host this
weekend to Concordia University, Grace College, Montreat College, Shorter
University and Union College in the 3rd Annual Rumpke Invitational.
The Tigers (4-6) opened the tournament against
Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Montreat, winning in straight games, 25-18,
25-16, 25-22. They followed that up with their third straight-game victory,
25-15, 25-15, 25-15, over Concordia.
The freshmen came up big in the attack game, Rachel
Eubanks led against Concordia with 16 of the teams 42 kills and Allyson
Wilbourn had 10 of 44 in the Montreat match. Eubanks added eight in the first
match, while Caraline Maher had six kills.
Sophomore Kathryn Smith had seven kills in the first win
and nine in the night cap.
Senior Liz Goodin had 63 assists in the two matches and
"They are growing leaps and bounds each day," said GC
coach Nick Griffin said. "When a team has this many freshmen coming in it will
obviously take time gel and trust each other. We can see it happening."
In six games, Griffin was very pleased with his defensive
back line of Rebekah Moore, Lindsey Wise, Stephanie Gurren and Kelsey Luckett.
"They were phenomenal tonight," Griffin said. "We have
veterans stepping up in roles where the team needs them this season."
The Tigers return to action in the morning against
Shorter University and then finish the four-match weekend against Union
College. GC plays at 10 am and 3 pm in Davis-Reid Alumni Gym.
