Georgetown College men's and women's basketball may have a bit of a new look to it, but the tradition of success is nothing new.
In the preseason polls released earlier this week, the Tiger men's team was tabbed No. 7 nationally and picked along with University of the Pikeville to win the Mid-South Conference. The women were receiving votes on the national scene and picked fifth in the league.
Both teams will be under the direction of long time assist coaches to legendary Georgetown coaches Happy Osborne and Susan Johnson. Osborne spent 30-plus seasons on the Orange & Black sidelines, the past 15 as head coach; while Johnson was at the helm for 32 years.
Chris Briggs, who served under Osborne the past four years, takes over the reins for the men and associate head coach Andrea McCloskey is up to guide the women.
Georgetown returns a solid nucleus for both coaches. On the men's side, GC has Tyrone Shelley, Aaron Morris, Johonne Hamilton, Russ Middleton and Maurice Pearson back from a 32-5 and national tournament semifinalist team.
McCloskey returns Mikkah Rogers, Gina Beining, Shavon Scott, Jessica Waddle, Devon Golden, Kourtney Tyra, Andrea Howard and Lizza Jonas. She also has Chelsey Johnson who joined the team this past January.
The MSC has several teams on both sides in the national poll. Defending national champion Pikeville is preseason No. 1, St. Catharine is in at No. 17, while Campbellsville and University of the Cumberlands are receiving votes.
GC's men tip it up 8 pm Thursday night against Miami-Hamilton and the women are in action for the first time 8 pm Friday, Nov. 4 in the Habitat Classic.
