Two of the Top 5 defenses clashed in Georgetown, KY Saturday afternoon in the 2011 NAIA Football Championship Series First Round.
No. 3 Georgetown College (11-0) took a late drive in the second quarter to go up 14-7 and never looked back. Neal Pawsat hit Rob Maden on 26-yard strike and the Tigers won a defensive battle, 21-7, over No. 15 Benedictine College (9-3).
The Ravens struck first when Pawsat's first play from scrimmage was intercepted by Nick Rudolph and returned 22-yards 21 seconds into the game. The rookie quarterback calmed down and led an 80-yard ensuing drive for the equalizer. Pawsat hit Chris Gohman for the 12-yard score and a 7-7 game.
Both defenses flexed their muscles. BC came in the game as the third best defense, allowing just 11.6 points per game, while GC was fifth with 12.8 ppg, and a stalemate occurred for the rest of the first and most of the second quarter.
The third quarter was back and forth as the teams traded punts, but Georgetown put together the decisive drive early in the fourth. The Tigers drained 7:55 off the clock and Adam Schmitz did a one-yard dive on a third and goal play.
The 14 points were too much to overcome for the Ravens. Benedictine came in averaging just less than 400 yards per game, but managed just 278, while Georgetown averages 412.5 and got 366.
Offensive Player of the Game was Pawsat, going 23-of-39 with 267 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Winston Hines was the Defensive Player of the Game with two interceptions.
Georgetown returns to action next Saturday in a post-Thanksgiving game. The opponent and place for the 2011 NAIA FCS Second Round will be determined Sunday afternoon.
