University of Pikeville did what it did this past year in Kansas City - get behind and make a furious push. But, the comeback came up just short, as Georgetown College opened Mid-South Conference play with an 86-84 win Saturday.
The Tigers (7-0, 1-0 MSC) were ahead 73-58 with under 10 minutes to play. But, the Bears (6-1, 0-1) pulled within one 85-84 with 6.8 remaining. Russ Middleton stepped to the line for GC and hit one-of-two as the Tigers pulled out the win at the East Kentucky Expo Center.
Georgetown got 38 points off the bench, including a team-tying high 16 from Tyrone Shelley. The senior hit a three to tie the game early in the first half, igniting a 12-0 run. The Tigers never trailed again. Maurice Pearson also had 16 points, while Garel Craig chipped in 12 and Allan Thomas had 11.
The Tigers stay on the road, facing University of Virginia College at Wise Monday. Tip is set for 8 pm.
