[Women's Soccer] Castleman inks seven freshmen for 2013

Every class is unique and special for their own reasons and this past November women's soccer coach Leah Crews Castleman said goodbye to five very talented seniors. This bunch, for the better part of their tenure at Georgetown, was the backbone of the defense and the offensive fire power up top. With every graduation comes another group with a chance to meddle their talents with Castleman's game plan, taking Georgetown to another height in competition.

As of early June, the sixth-year coach has added seven true freshmen for the 2013 season – Shelby Vogel, Brittney Moshos, Kelsey Aerni, Danielle Lang, Amanda Hasl, Max Zimmer and Abby Sobolewski.

"I'm really excited about this incoming class," Castleman said. "I think they all possess the skills to help out immediately, while also giving depth. It is difficult to lose five players at once let alone five that meant so much to this program."

The past two seasons, Georgetown College women's basketball has been a force inside the strong Mid-South Conference and made good runs in the NAIA national tournament.

Third-year coach Andrea McCloskey returns a lot of her scoring threats for the coming year, but with the 2013-14 recruiting class has added some inside depth with Emilie Ziese and Jenna Meyer.

"I am very pleased with the two incoming freshman's ability to work hard in the classroom and on the court," McCloskey said.

[Women's Soccer] Williams returning to Georgetown

Georgetown College women's soccer will have a familiar face returning to assist the team this fall. Tiger athletics hired recent graduate and former Tiger Caitlin Williams as the assistant for coach Leah Crews Castleman.

"I'm thrilled that Caitlin has decided to join us for a sixth season as a part of the Georgetown College women's soccer program, this time as a member of the coaching staff," Castleman said. "Caitlin brings a wealth of knowledge to the program as she has played every position and has quite a bit of coaching experience at the club level. She is a natural leader, a person who can inspire others through her love of the game, excitement for training and passion for winning.

"More importantly, she is a person of very high character and will continue to serve as an outstanding role model for the players. There are hands down no other potential candidates who love this program as much as Caitlin; she will put her heart and soul into every second she spends working with this team."

It was indeed a great night to be a Tiger, the theme that began with the first inductee Jim Carty through the final presentation to honor Dr. William H. Crouch, Jr., this past Saturday at the 2013 Athletic Hall of Fame.

Carty, Kent Garrett, Jessica Leonard, Elizabeth Brown McHale and John Owen make 83 inductees through 16 years. Georgetown added the 1989 women's basketball team to the previous 11 teams already in the Hall of Fame and Bob Tripure became the sixth distinguished alum.

"We have so many people that deserve this as you look back over our outstanding history in athletics," said associate athletic director Austin Sparks. "Fortunately, we have a great committee that takes this very seriously and each year we have another fabulous class of inductees."

Kourtney Tyra has one goal – win. Along the way to achieving this goal she is shattering Georgetown College women's basketball records and setting new standards of excellence.

"She has an intense drive and she's had it since day one of arriving at Georgetown," said GC coach Andrea McCloskey. "Kourtney is a player, teammate and coach all in one, which is what you look for in point guards."

As she enters her senior season, Tyra holds the all-time assists, the single-season assist and the consecutive free throws made records. She is the lone female Tiger to tally a triple-double, is climbing the charts on the all-time scoring list and is 132 rebounds shy of being in the Top 20 all-time there as well. She is a two-time NAIA All-American and helped Georgetown to a 53-40 record in her three seasons with one national tournament run into the quarterfinals.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Georgetown College baseball got off the snide in NAIA Baseball Championship Opening Round action tallying its first win Friday morning in Montgomery's elimination bracket. The No. 21 Tigers (36-18) got behind early, but quickly responded and rolled 12-2 over Mount Vernon Nazarene (32-17) to advance to this evening's game against Indiana Tech (32-17).

The game is currently set for an 8 pm EST start.

"It's good to end that little streak and finally get a win in the opening round," said GC coach Micah Baumfeld. "We knew we were hitting well and like hitting here, but it was a matter of stringing things together. In the bottom of the second we took the lead, but really saw our offense come to life in the third."

Georgetown College had up and down times this past weekend at the Mid-South Conference Meet, but in the end challenged itself and set several new Tiger records.

"It's the way it goes sometimes," said GC coach Todd McDaniel. "You will have off days and meets. However, I was really pleased overall to see us make improvements in a couple of areas. You want to win the conference meet for bragging rights, but we still have two more big meets that could determine our placing some athletes at the national meet. That is what matters."

Georgetown College softball came up a game shy of battling out of the elimination bracket of the Mid-South Conference tournament Monday.

The Tigers (32-14) bounced back as best they could after an epic 15-inning battle to start the day. Georgetown scored first, but could not hold off CU (41-14). Campbellsville scored three in the bottom of the fourth and held on for the 3-1 win.

It was the fifth meeting between these two teams and all of CU's wins came from the long ball. Heather Oakley's two run blast broke open the 1-1 tie and gave her team enough breathing room to advance to the elimination finals.

Georgetown College softball etched its name in history Monday at the Mid-South Conference softball tournament. The Tigers and University of Virginia College at Wise played an epic 15-inning game (that is two full games and an inning), which is the fourth longest in NAIA.
