[Volleyball] Volleyball challenging NCAA D I schools

Georgetown College's volleyball team is taking its game to the next level this spring, the NCAA Division I level. The Tigers are on a tour of several top tier programs in the area including Morehead State, Xavier and Western Kentucky University to name a few.

Georgetown College volleyball coach Nick Griffin has announced the signing of Ashlee Howe for the upcoming 2013 season. The 6-foot-0 middle-hitter was a two-year starter for Ryle High School and coach Tasha Tanner-Lovins.

"Ashlee is an exciting addition to our 2013 recruiting class," Griffin said. "Her athleticism, speed and length will give us an important weapon for the future and even greater versatility. She has only begun to scratch the surface of how good she could be."

Ryle was 55-13 during Howe's time on varsity. The Lady Raiders captured two 33rd District Championships and twice finished as a semi-finalist in the Region 9 tournament. Howe garnered All-Region accolades following her junior season and then capped off her high school career by being named All-District and Honorable Mention All-State.

Georgetown College volleyball coach Nick Griffin enjoyed his team's success - advancing out of pool-play at the national tournament and finishing with a 36-6 record - for a few days and then has been back hard on the recruiting trail to ensure the high standard is maintained in the coming years.

The fourth-year coach is pleased to announce the signings of Courtney Grafton and Maddie Kunkel.

"Georgetown has always taken great pride in our team defense, and we are fortunate to be adding two of the top liberos from the hotbed in Cincinnati," Griffin said. "Courtney and Maddie bring outstanding athleticism, competitiveness and work ethic, which allow them to contribute early in their careers.

"We envision them combining with current freshman Kristen Schellhaas to form one of the top backcourts in the country."

Sophomores Rachel Eubanks and Caraline Maher continued to be honored for their efforts in the 2012 volleyball season. Both were named to the NAIA All-American teams Monday afternoon as released by the main office in Kansas City, Mo.

Georgetown College volleyball saw its exciting run in the national tournament come to a close Friday afternoon in Sioux City, Iowa. The No. 13 Tigers (36-6) played a very tough Viterbo (38-5) team, but could not come up with enough fire power in the 25-21, 25-16, 25-22 loss.

"We played one of the most complete defensive games that I've seen all year against a top quality opponent," said GC coach Nick Griffin. "Viterbo forced us into a lot of errors and blocked us six times. It is hard to overcome that."

This team of mostly sophomores and freshmen might be the youngest Tiger team to come out of pool-play in the national tournament, and they did it with grit and heart.

Georgetown College volleyball advances out of pool-play into the single-elimination round of the NAIA National tournament following a straight set win over host Morningside (17-16). The No. 13 Tigers (36-5) came to life as the match went on for the 29-27, 25-21, 25-14 win.

They play at 1:30 pm Friday against Viterbo University. The V-Hawks are 35-7 and came out of Pool F with The Master's. If the Tigers beat Viterbo, they would play again at 9 pm Friday against rival Columbia. The Cougars are 40-1 and earned a bye after pool-play. The last time GC and Columbia played was in pool-play of the 2009 national tournament in a win or go home situation.

The accolades of a resurgence season continue to pour in for Georgetown College volleyball. The No. 13 Tigers, currently in the hunt for a national title in Sioux City, Iowa, received several AVCA Southeast Region honors Wednesday afternoon as released by the organization.

Georgetown College volleyball suffered a loss in pool-play Wednesday evening to No. 1 Concordia University Irvine. The No. 13 Tigers (35-5) falls to 1-1 in the round robin portion of the NAIA National Volleyball tournament in Sioux City, Iowa following the 25-11, 25-19, 25-15 setback.

"The Eagles are ridiculously good," said GC coach Nick Griffin. "We knew that, but what we take out of that match is how we didn't shy away from battling with them."

Georgetown College's volleyball team needed a pair of late rallies to open pool-play in Sioux City, Iowa with a win. The No. 13 Tigers (35-4) defeated No. 12 Indiana University East, 23-25, 25-21, 26-24, 20-25, 15-10 to be with No. 1 Concordia as the two undefeated teams in Pool A after day one.

"It was an exciting match," said GC coach Nick Griffin. "We showed a lot of grit against a very veteran team and made the plays when we had too. This was a big win."

IU East came out on a tear in set four to level the match, which set up the biggest rally of the day.

Trailing 6-1 in the decisive set, GC roared back winning 14 of the final 18 points to secure the win.

Georgetown College volleyball starts its bid for a national title at 6:45 pm Tuesday against No. 12 Indiana University East. The No. 13 Tigers (34-4) are making their 15th appearance in the NAIA National Tournament and first since 2009 when they were runners up.

The Red Wolves (44-3) enter the tournament behind a senior laden bunch, including setter Lauren Crump. She was the Kentucky Intercollegiate Player of the Year.

[Volleyball] No. 13 Tigers learn national tournament pool-play opponents

Georgetown College's volleyball team learned its Sioux City, Iowa pool opponents Sunday afternoon. The No. 13 Tigers will be pitted against No. 1 Concordia (30-0), No. 12 Indiana University East (43-3) and Morningside(26-9).

There are six pools of four teams each. The top two teams from every pool will advance to a 12-team single-elimination tournament. Four teams from pool-play will receive a bye in the opening round of the elimination section.

All of Georgetown's pool-play matches will be at 5:45 CST starting Nov. 27 with IU East. The next day the team plays Concordia and finishes with Morningside on Nov. 29.

Georgetown College volleyball hosted Xavier University at Louisiana in the NAIA National Tournament First Round Saturday. The No. 13 Tigers (34-3) had a scare early against the Gold Nuggets (22-8), but rallied for the 23-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-20 win in Davis-Reid Alumni Gym.

GC battled a defensive minded opponent, but finally found ways for the team's powerful hitters to find holes.

Allyson Wilbourn led the way with 18 kills, while Caraline Maher chipped in with 14 and Kathryn Smith 11. For the match the Tigers hit .333, while holding XULA to .137. Taylor Reuther was the long Gold Nugget in double-digit kills with 13.

Georgetown College volleyball (33-4) will host a National Tournament Opening Round match this Saturday for the chance to advance into the NAIA Volleyball Championships in Sioux City, Iowa Nov. 26-Dec. 1.

The No. 13 Tigers will have to play Xavier University of Louisiana (22-7) at 7:30 pm in Davis-Reid Alumni Gym.

[Volleyball] No. 11 Tigers comeback for semifinal win, lose in tough finals

The No. 11 Tigers (33-4) were looking for their first Mid-South Conference tournament title since 2009. Before 2010, no other MSC team had won the tournament. GC warded off a five-set threat in the semifinals Saturday at MidAmerican Sports Center in Louisville, but could not comeback from a 2-0 set deficit in the finals.

"I was proud of the way we battled against Campbellsville," said GC coach Nick Griffin. "Then we had to almost immediately turn around and play a very hot Lindsey Wilson team."

The Tigers handed rival Campbellsville University (25-10) the 20-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-13, 15-11 defeat before falling to defending MSC tournament champion Lindsey Wilson College 29-27, 25-19, 23-25, 28-26.

[Volleyball] No. 11 Tigers roll into semifinals

The No. 11 Tigers continued their winning ways Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Mid-South Conference volleyball tournament. Georgetown College (32-3) won in straight sets over Bluefield College (16-22), 25-16, 25-12, 25-14, at MidAmerican Sports Center in Louisville.

"It's a good start to this weekend," said GC coach Nick Griffin. "We have a mission and know that each match is important."
