Georgetown College volleyball had its chances Thursday night, but host Embry-Riddle Aeronautical always found a way to rally in a four-set win. This was the opening match of the three-day ERAU Labor Day Weekend Tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The No. 11 Tigers (0-1) took set one and had large leads in the following two sets, but could not hold them. ERAU had one final late rally in a close set four for the 19-25, 26-24, 27-25, 28-26 win.

Georgetown does not have long to regroup with No. 3 Wayland Baptist as its next opponent 2 pm Friday.

To be a top team, you have to beat the top teams. Georgetown College volleyball understands that as it has become one of the premier programs. Thursday marks the start of the 2014 season for the preseason No. 11 Tigers, and there is nothing easy about it.

Nick Griffin and his team have traveled to Daytona Beach, Fla. To face three Top 20 teams and the fourth opponent is host Embry-Riddle – preseason No. 21.

"We've never been afraid to play the best," Griffin said. "This is what we always do. Not just this weekend, but our whole schedule might be the toughest in the country."

Georgetown College volleyball was narrowly picked second in the Mid-South Conference preseason poll. The Tigers finished ranked No. 10 this past year and was the only league school to reach the elimination round of the national tournament. Regular season champion Lindsey Wilson College, which finished No. 16 and the only other MSC school in the national tournament, was picked to win the conference again.

"I'm not surprised by that and it should give our players something toward which to work," said GC coach Nick Griffin. "We beat Lindsey in a very competitive match in the conference tournament this past year, but they won both regular season meetings. It has been a great rivalry the past few seasons."

The Blue Raiders received 47 votes, including five of the eight first-place votes, from the conference coaches. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.

Georgetown College volleyball adds two coaches this season. With the departure of assistant Amy Barmore, coach Nick Griffin has hired Tori Verville to be his new varsity assistant. Felicia Pace, a long-time coaching veteran, will also be helping out this season.

"Turnover at the assistant position is something you have to expect at this level and with this quality of a program," Griffin said. "Just in my time, I've had two assistants who are now head coaches and I fully expect to see Amy at the helm of a team in the very near future."

Georgetown College's volleyball program is breeding ground for coaches. The Tigers have seen many assistant coaches move on to take on programs or make that next step in their careers. Amy Barmore, '09, will do just that this season just south of Georgetown in Lexington.

The highly decorated Tiger athlete returned to the Orange & Black in 2011 and today she was announced as the full time assistant for Kyle Walton at Transylvania University.

"It is never easy leaving what felt like home to me," Barmore said about the decision. "However, this is a chance for me to learn and grow as a coach. I'm chasing my dream of being a Division I coach and this is the next step."
