Georgetown College Tiger cheerleaders are holding open tryouts April 30 from 9 am–12 pm in Davis-Reid Alumni Gym for the 2016-17 season. Tryouts are open to male and female returning students, transfers and incoming freshmen who want to be a member of the team.
All participants will have the opportunity to demonstrate three tumbling passes, one of which should be a standing back handspring; three jumps – toe touch, pike and hurdler; and stunts. Everyone will also be required to learn a dance and sideline cheers taught on the day of tryouts. Each person will be looked at and scored on their individual ability.
Wednesday was an exciting day in Frankfort as Georgetown College cheerleaders got their chance to compete in the Mid-South Conference championships.
The evening was kicked off with five league schools performing in the large team competition and was followed by several stunt categories. Rachel Mergenthal, Sarah Weiner, Kaya Kelly and Bre Ragland teamed up in the all-girl stunt portion and wowed the crowd and judges. The routine started with a backhandspring by Mergenthal into a front flip up to an extension. The foursome stayed technically solid, losing no points on deductions for first place in the all-female stunt competition.
The team as a whole finished fourth by a narrow margin for several deductions to their highly difficult routine.
Over the past six weeks, Georgetown College cheerleaders have been perfecting competition routines for the upcoming Mid-South Conference Cheerleading Competition. The team is holding a dress rehearsal for campus 6 pm Tuesday in the Rec.
Come support our Tiger Cheerleaders as they get ready to tumble, cheer and stunt their way against all the other MSC cheerleading squads.
The competition will be held 7 pm Wednesday in Frankfort Civic Center. Since 2000, when this competition began, Georgetown has won it four times and been no lower than third five other times.
Tis the season to be scary as hallows eve awaits us. Georgetown College cheerleaders are looking to put some fun into the night before Halloween with the Tiger Cheer 5Pooktacular.
"It is a 5k that will help to raise funds for the cheerleading team as well as provide some fun for the participants," said GC coach Betsy Montgomery. "The race starts at 7 pm at Giddings Lawn."
The cost is $20 for early registration or $25 that day.
