No. 18 Tigers Defense Scores Three Times in 34-13 Rout over Cumberland on Homecoming

GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The No. 18 Georgetown College football team (5-2, 2-1 MSC) shined on Homecoming with a 34-13 win over Cumberland University (4-3, 0-2 MSC) at Toyota Stadium on Saturday afternoon. 

Georgetown has won the last 10 meetings with the Phoenix dating back to the 2016 season.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

  • Gehrig Slunaker completed 16 of his 28 passes for 190 yards.
  • Georgetown ran for 56 yards on the ground, led by 31 yards from Guy Bailey
  • Brian Tawuo led the receiving charge with 81 yards on five catches with one touchdown.
  • Nate Craft scored 10 points on the day with two field goals and nailed all four PATs.
  • The Georgetown defense held Cumberland to 356 total yards on 86 plays, led by a game-high 13 tackles from Clayton Melcher.
  • Isaiah Wills-Jackson returned a 99-yard interception for a touchdown while Tyler Snell recovered an 8-yard fumble for a score.

SCORING SUMMARY
First Quarter:

  • The Tigers kicked off to start the game and forced the Phoenix to a nine-play drive that went just 29 yards.
  • Georgetown took over on the 10-yard line and started the scoring from there.
  • After a 26-yard completion to Jamarcus Robinson and a 14-yard catch from Colin Bratcher, the Tigers were threatening.
  • Nate Craft came on to convert a 46-yard field goal, which was the difference in the first quarter.
  • All three drives from there ended in punts.

Second Quarter:

  • Georgetown scored first in the second quarter as well after their five-play drive resulted in a Brian Tawuo 31-yard receiving touchdown.
  • The Tigers' defense held up on the next series, stopping the Phoenix on a 4th-and-1 at the 45-yard line.
  • On offense, the next drive featured six positive yardage plays as the Tigers drove down to the 17-yard line before an incomplete pass disrupted the perfection.
  • With just five seconds in the half, Nate Craft fired off a 35-yard field goal to help the Tigers to a 13-0 halftime lead. 

Third Quarter:

  • Receiving the ball to start the second half, the Tigers' offense stalled out of the locker room.
  • After punting back to Cumberland, the Tigers' defense forced a fumble when Javyn Martin knocked the ball loose to set up an Isaiah Wills-Jackson 18-yard touchdown.
  • On the very next possession, the defense did it again.
  • This time, a Clayton Melcher forced fumble set up an 8-yard Tyler Snell return to give the Tigers a 27-0 lead.
  • The Phoenix responded with their first of two touchdowns on the day after finally securing the football.
  • Their next drive went 13 plays and 75 yards for a two-yard rushing touchdown.

Fourth Quarter:

  • Georgetown started the fourth quarter off with the ball and went 22 yards, but ended with a missed 46-yard field goal.
  • From there, both sides traded interceptions before Cumberland went on another long drive.
  • The Phoenix punched in a one-yard rush with 5:38 to play, making it a 27-13 game.
  • The Tigers were forced to punt on their next series before Isaiah Wills-Jackson returned a 99-yard interception back for the icing on the cake on Homecoming.
  • Georgetown stopped Cumberland on its final possession for the 34-13 victory.

The Tigers have a bye week next week before hitting the road to take on (RV) Bethel (3-2, 2-0 MSC) on Saturday, November 1 at 2:30 p.m.

The Wildcats had a bye week this week and take on the University of the Cumberlands (3-4, 0-3 MSC). Dating back to the 1995 campaign, Georgetown leads the all-time series against Bethel, 14-4.
