Grenadiers Use Late Surge to Upset No.3 Tigers on Opening Night
GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The No. 3 Georgetown College men's basketball team (0-1) opened its 2025-26 season with a 69-67 loss to Indiana-Southeast (1-0) in its first game played in the newly renovated Davis-Reid Alumni Gym on Friday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
From the jump, the Tigers' offense was rolling. Isaiah Mason scored the first seven points for Georgetown, whose defense did not surrender the first points until just under the 16-minute mark. By the first media timeout, the Tigers had doubled up the Grenadiers, 12-6. Chance Dillingham connected for his first 3-pointer of the season at the 13:26 mark as Justice Small and Rashad Bishop also had buckets to help the Tigers to a 19-14 lead at the second media timeout. Georgetown opened up as much as an eight-point advantage in the final 10 minutes of the half, but the Grenadiers found a way to stay within reach, pulling to within just a point at the :49 mark. Bishop hit one of two foul shots to give the Tigers a 31-29 lead heading into the locker room.
Georgetown started the second half on an 11-2 run fueled by six points in just over a minute from Scotty Browning. The Grenadiers offense found its way back into the game, though, making it a 49-48 Georgetown lead with 11:11 to play. After a flurry of free throws, IU Southeast had tied things at 54-54 with 8:03 left. IU Southeast grabbed its first lead at 7:36 with another made foul shot before both sides traded 3-pointers. Down the stretch, the Grenadiers found an answer for everything the Tigers threw at them, and held on for the upset, 69-67.
THE TEAM
Georgetown shot 35.8% from the field. The Tigers were 5-27 (18.5%) from deep and shot 14-18 (77.8%) at the free-throw line. IUSE won the rebounding battle, 46-39, while the Tigers held the assists advantage, 10-8. The Tigers also held the edge in steals, 9-6, and blocks, 5-2.
THE PLAYERS
* Isaiah Mason scored a game-high 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field while also pulling down six rebounds.
* Rashad Bishop also touched double figures with 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
* Aden Nyekan just missed a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds.
UP NEXT
The Tigers hit the road for the Remy Williams Memorial Invitation, where they take on Park University (0-0) on Friday, October 31 at 7:00 p.m.
In addition to the Pirates, Georgetown takes on Peru State (1-0) on Saturday and then closes the weekend of ball against #2 Arizona Christian University (1-0) on Sunday.
