Tigers Splash 18 3-Pointers in Rout of Phoenix
GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The No. 18 Georgetown College men's basketball team (15-4, 2-1 MSC) knocked off Cumberland University (8-10, 0-3 MSC) 104-81 in Davis-Reid Alumni Gym on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Georgetown wasted little time asserting its offense in this one as Bubba Leavell and Isaiah Mason sank 3-pointers in the opening minute to capture a quick 6-0 lead, which forced a Cumberland timeout. Aden Nyekan hit a pair of layups, and Julius added three points to give the Tigers a 13-0 lead just three minutes in. Georgetown had built a 16-2 lead by the media timeout, and the Tigers' sharp shooting continued. By the midway point of the half, Georgetown had doubled up Cumberland 30-15. In total, Georgetown hit 11 3-pointers in the first half to command a 58-39 lead at the break. Darien Lewis led with 14 points, hitting four shots from distance.
Leavell started the second, scoring the first points for the Tigers, who put up 46 second-half points. Adding to his three first-half treys, Leavell sank four more in the second half to finish with seven from beyond the arc and 23 points overall. Georgetown's largest lead of the night came with 8:11 to play as a Leavell 3-pointer opened a 91-58 advantage. Zion Harmon had 11 first-half points and added 10 in the second to finish with 21 behind Leavell. Georgetown improved to 2-1 in league play with a 23-point victory.
THE TEAM
Georgetown shot 56.1% from the field. The Tigers were 18-36 (50.0%) from deep and shot 12-18 (66.7%) at the free-throw line. GC won the rebounding battle 41-30, while the Tigers held the assists advantage, 21-12. Both sides produced eight steals.
THE PLAYERS
* Bubba Leavell led the way with 23 points on 7-of-14 shooting from deep with three rebounds.
* Zion Harmon added 21 points off the bench and pulled down two rebounds.
* Darien Lewis finished with 16 points and dished out six assists.
