Lewis' Late Layup Pushes No. 18 Tigers Past Blue Raiders
GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The No. 18 Georgetown College men's basketball team (18-5, 4-3 MSC) made it back-to-back MSC wins with an 83-81 victory over Lindsey Wilson University (15-7, 4-3 MSC) in Davis-Reid Alumni Gym on Monday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A highly paced game set the tone for the evening as both teams came out with a made 3-pointer in the opening minute of play. Lindsey Wilson's only offense by the media timeout was another made 3-pointer as the Tigers strung together points on three of four trips down the floor to lead 12-6. A 7-0 run fueled things for Georgetown out of the break, who led 19-6 at the 13:22 mark. The next three minutes were friendly to the Blue Raiders, who outscored the Tigers by three to make it a 24-14 game at the under-10 media break. Georgetown scored five straight following this timeout as Julius Edmonds poured in two of four first-half points to stretch things to a 29-14 game. Lindsey Wilson chipped away over the next eight minutes as Georgetown went into the break with a 36-35 lead.
The second half saw LWU take the lead on the opening possession, and the intensity only grew from there. Darien Lewis' dunk at the 15:37 mark pushed the Georgetown lead back to seven at 46-39. Lewis made the next five Georgetown points, and the Tigers had maintained their advantage at the under-10 timeout, leading 58-49. Some clutch shots from LWU kept things close as Georgetown kept its lead by the under-five media break. Darien Lewis sank a pair of foul shots out of the break to push the lead back to six. LWU used a 7-0 run, though to capture a 70-69 lead with 3:28 to play. Georgetown responded with an 8-0 run to put things nearly out of reach with Zion Harmon's 3-ball just inside two minutes to go. The Blue Raiders sliced into things with three 3-pointers to trim the deficit and even take an 81-80 lead with just 12 seconds to play.
THE TEAM
Georgetown shot 45.2% from the field. The Tigers were 6-27 (22.2%) from deep and shot 21-31 (67.7%) at the free-throw line. LWU won the rebounding battle 41-38, while both sides had 12 assists. GC produced 11 steals to LWU's six.
THE PLAYERS
* Darien Lewis scored a team-high 29 points with three assists.
* Zion Harmon added 22 points with four steals.
* Isaiah Mason finished with 10 points, five steals, four rebounds, and three assists.
