No. 15 Tigers Hold Off Blue Raiders Behind Leavell's 25
COLUMBIA, Ky. – The No. 15 Georgetown College men's basketball team (21-6, 7-4 MSC) defeated Lindsey Wilson (18-9, 6-5 MSC) 81-77 in the Biggers Sports Center on Thursday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lindsey Wilson sank three of its first four shots and stormed out to a 7-2 lead in the opening minutes. Isaiah Mason and Aden Nyekan combined to weather the storm and had the Tigers ahead 10-9 by the opening media break. From there, both sides quite literally traded baskets until the next stoppage in play with the Blue Raiders owning a 21-19 advantage with 8:51 to play in the half. After falling down by as many as four and leading by as many as six, the Tigers commanded a 37-36 lead at the break.
In the second half it was Georgetown who had the hot hands early as the Tigers opened up a quick 47-40 lead under three minutes into the half. From there, Bubba Leavell took over. The junior splashed home four 3-pointers and had 16 of his 25 points in the second to help lift the Tigers past the Blue Raiders, 81-77.
THE TEAM
Georgetown shot 41.8% from the field. The Tigers were 12-34 (35.3%) from deep and shot a perfect 13-13 (100.0%) at the free-throw line. GC won the rebounding battle 38-32, while the Tigers also led in assists, 17-16. GC produced six steals to LWU's five.
THE PLAYERS
* Bubba Leavell scored a team-high 25 points and had two assists.
* Darien Lewis added 17 points with seven rebounds and four assists.
* Aden Nyekan helped out with 14 points, three rebounds, and an assist.
UP NEXT
The Tigers return home to host Campbellsville University (18-9, 3-8 MSC) on Saturday, February 21, on Senior Day.
Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m. against the Tigers in Davis-Reid Alumni Gym. Campbellsville defeated Georgetown 78-67 on February 4 in the Powell Athletic Center.
