Tigers show grit in 4-4 tie with MVNU
Nick Gregory was close to tying his four-goal game earlier this season in a much needed way Wednesday. Georgetown College men's soccer team traveled to Mount Vernon, Ohio to play Mount Vernon Nazarene.
The Cougars (6-1-1) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but Gregory equalized the game and had a hand in every goal scored by the Tigers (1-2-2). The result was a tie, 4-4, but much improved following a tough loss Saturday. This is the second double overtime game for Georgetown, both resulting in ties.
"Loved the determination and grit we showed today after going two behind," said GC coach Derek Willis. "The goals we gave away early were very unlucky, but the guys really stepped up the pressure and were able to change the game."
Gregory assisted Blaine Skeen in the 61st minute to make it four all in a game with 41 total shots taken.
"Gregory's three goals really propelled us and once Skeen tied it at four, we thought we were the only team that was going to win it," Willis said.
MVNU jumped out with two goals in the first 15 minutes. Gregory got one back on an unassisted goal in the 26th minute.
The Cougars made it a two-goal edge in the 32nd minute, but the flurry of first half goals was far from over.
In the final 13 minutes, Gregory scored twice and Mount Vernon once for a 4-3 host lead at the half.
"I'm very proud of the players today. MVNU is an excellent team that doesn't concede goals," Willis said. "The guys showed we can play with anyone when we are focused and determined."
The Cougars had allowed just five goals in seven previous games and have five shutouts.
Georgetown returns home 4 pm Saturday to play University of Pikeville to open Mid-South Conference action.
