Tigers burned by hot Fire shooting

#18 Georgetown fell on Saturday against Southeastern (FL) in the Julie Costello Classic, played at Thomas More University. The Fire shot 51% from the field and knocked down 11 3s in the 96-80 win, handing Georgetown its 3rd loss of the year.

Georgetown (5-3) came out hot from the field, hitting 8 of 12 shots in the 1st quarter, putting the pressure on Southeastern. 6 Tiger turnovers would help keep the Fire in the came as GC led just 21-19 after 1. In the 2nd quarter, the Fire lived up to their moniker. They hit 5-7 from three and overall shot 60% from the field in the 2nd. Georgetown held its own as well, shooting 56% in the quarter and knocking down all 3 of its 3-point attempts. Southeastern would put up 30 points in the quarter to grab a 49-45 lead at halftime.

In the 3rd, the Fire kept the pressure on the Tigers defense. Southeastern shot 59% from the field, including 11-15 on 2-point shots to keep and pad its lead. On the other end, Georgetown could not keep the same scoring pace as the Tigers shot just 35% from the field. 3 threes and 6 free throws kept the Tigers in the hunt, but the Fire put up 32 points in the 3rd, taking a 81-68 lead into the 4th. The pace finally caught up to both teams in the 4th as neither was able to find much rhythm on offense. Neither side shot over 40%, which stymied any rally from Georgetown. Southeastern outscored GC 15-12 in the 4th to win going away, 96-80.

The Tigers struggled to contain the Fire duo of Gabby Suarez and Raegan Linster, who combined for 51 points and 7-14 shooting from 3. Izzy Lamparty led Georgetown with 17, while Erin Toller added 16.

Georgetown returns to MSC play next Thursday with a road trip to Shawnee State. Tipoff is set for 5:30pm.
