No. 23 Tigers Extend Winning Streak to 12 with Win Over WAU
GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The No. 23 Georgetown College women's basketball team (12-0) knocked off Washington Adventist (4-2) 66-40 to win its twelfth straight game in Davis-Reid Alumni Gym on Wednesday night.
The 12-0 start matches the best start for a Tiger team in the Jeff Nickel era, as Georgetown also began the 2023-24 campaign winners of 12 straight. Through 12 games last season, the Tigers were 11-1, but began the season 18-1 overall.
The win also was head coach Jeff Nickel's 100th career victory as head coach at Georgetown. Nickel, in his fifth season, is 100-42 overall at Georgetown and owns a career head coaching record of 314-102. Nickel becomes the third Tiger coach to reach the 100-win milestone and the fastest to do so as well. Susan Johnson used the better part of her first seven seasons to eclipse 100 wins while Andrea McCloskey ended her tenure with 100+ wins in six seasons.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tigers' offense came out fairly slow to start, coming up empty on their first three possessions before Jackie Onunwor got things started with a layup. After falling behind 4-3 in the opening two minutes, the Tigers took a 9-7 lead into the first media timeout and clamped down on the defensive end, allowing just two points to the Shock the rest of the quarter. The Tigers led 15-9 at the end of the opening 10 minutes.
Another slow start to the second did not ultimately stop the Tigers, as Georgetown found offense from five different Tigers in the quarter. Georgetown led 19-14 at the media timeout in the second quarter and commanded a 27-21 lead at the half.
The Tigers' fitness and experience displayed themselves once more as Georgetown outscored WAU 23-10 in the quarter. The Tigers did their damage near the midway point when they turned an eight-point lead into 12, by going on an 8-2 run over just a minute span. Georgetown took a 50-31 lead into the fourth.
The opening two minutes were quiet offensively for the Tigers. WAU had two field goals in the opening two minutes and did not score again for nearly the next six minutes. By then, Georgetown led 59-37 and had put the game out of reach. In total, the Shock made just three field goals in the fourth as the Tigers went on to win 66-40.
THE TEAM
Georgetown shot 30.6% from the field. The Tigers were 7-44 (15.9%) from deep and shot 7-13 (53.8%) at the free-throw line. WAU outrebounded GC, 60-57. The Tigers led in assists, 16-4, and had five blocks. GC had 23 steals to WAU's seven.
