No. 14 Patriots Spoil Tigers Home Opener

GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The Georgetown College volleyball team (2-12, 0-4 MSC) lost its home opener to the University of the Cumberlands (17-0, 3-0 MSC) in Davis-Reid Alumni Gym on Tuesday night.

The Patriots defeated the Tigers in three sets, winning 25-13, 25-10, 25-19.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Patriots jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and held a 10-4 advantage before a service error stopped the streak. After three straight kills, Georgetown called its first timeout of the night at 13-5. The Patriots went on to win the first, 25-13.

Cumberlands stormed out of the gates in the second, winning the first seven points and forcing the Tigers to call for time once again. It was seven points later for the visitors before Georgetown called its second timeout at 14-2. Cumberlands earned the final four points of the second, winning 25-10.

Georgetown came out strong in the third, taking an early 3-1 lead before playing to a 4-4 tie. That was the last time the match was tied as the Patriots used an 11-5 spurt to take a 15-9 lead which they held for good. Despite consecutive kills from Giara Ferrari making it an 18-15 set, the Tigers could not come all the way back, falling 25-19.

THE TEAM
Georgetown hit 0.054 as a squad, with UC earning a .463 mark. The Tigers had 23 kills and 21 assists. Georgetown did not collect any blocks with three service aces and 24 digs. 

THE PLAYERS
Mallori Dunn-Martin put up a team-high six kills with five digs and a .316 hitting percentage.

Giara Ferrari added five kills to go with two digs and an assist.

Abie Butterworth collected four kills. 

UP NEXT
The Tigers continue their six-game homestand on Tuesday, October 6, when Rio Grande (16-6, 5-0 RSC) visits the newly renovated Davis-Reid Alumni Gym at 7:00 p.m.

The Red Storm swept the Tigers on September 6.
